“Can’t say I miss seeing you. What are you doing here in my building?”
Ambrose lifts a hand and shrugs, “Let’s say a lovely visit. Maybe I wanted to say hello to that lovely assistant you have. Lily, was it?”
Gabriel stiffens next to me, “Stay away from her.”
“I know. I got the message the seventh time you sent it.Your staff are under your pack’s protection and can not be touched yada, yada, yada.I get it,” Ambrose chuckles. “One thing you never mentioned is that you were hiring. Who is this gorgeous little blonde?”
So, he is a member of the supernatural world? Noted.
When he reaches his hand to greet me, I automatically extend my own hand and slide it into his. It is purely out of courtesy, but I don’t miss the little growl that escapes Gabriel.
However, when my hand comes into contact with Ambrose, he hisses and steps back.
I look at my hand and notice that the black tattoo looks even more pronounced.
“What the fuck?” Ambrose says through gritted teeth. “I can smell the blood on both of you, but something about her is not normal.”
Now it’s my turn to stiffen.
“Seriously, Ambrose, get out.”
“What the fuck is she?” Ambrose repeats.
“None of your business. Leave now before I have to call Seraphina.”
That makes Ambrose regain his composure. His eyes are glued to mine as he takes one step after another until he walks out of the office building.
Then Gabriel turns to me to inspect my hand. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? Did he do something to you?”
I shake my head. I have a queasy feeling in my stomach from that interaction, but nothing major. Whatever Ambrose felt when our palms touched was all on him, not me.
“I am okay, Gabriel. I promise.”
He cups my cheeks, studying me before turning his head to check for someone. Whatever the deal he has with this Ambrose guy, seeing him here has him spooked.
“Gabriel, who the hell was that?”
“That was Ambrose Hargrave. He is a vampire and someone we should all steer clear of.”
“Why?”
“Because he can’t know what you are. He can’t ever find out.”
As Gabriel takes my hand and leads me out of the building, I am too scared to ask the obvious question. Why? What would happen if the vampire found out I was a fairy?
Chapter 23
Gabriel
The encounter with Ambrose has me on high alert. I hate the man, and for good reason. Ambrose is known to be the king of mischief, and if he knew that I was protecting a fairy, the first thing he would do was use the information for his own personal gain.
He is also the reason my company is working on the new WealthBloom project. He stole our previous project and immediately sold my idea to another company; an idea he claimed as his own. Ambrose’s company is my competitor; somehow, he swindled my idea right out from under me. Of course, I was able to track it all back to him. It took a lot of investigation to find out who his mole was in my company, but I have taken measures to ensure that it will not happen again.
Ambrose is a menace. No one knows where his true allegiance lies. Most supernaturals fear him, as he is rumored to work with necromancers and other dark powers. Ambrose does only what serves Ambrose, and every supernatural knows to stay away from the creepy blond vampire.
I cannot let Jade’s identity be his bargaining chip.
“You are not listening?” Jade says.
