“Jade, you carry noble blood in your veins. You are a fairy, descended from a lineage that holds immense power. It’s in your blood, child.”

I’m speechless. Fairy? Noble blood? It’s like being thrust into a fairytale (no pun intended), only it feels far too real. My mind races, trying to make sense of it.

Gabriel moves from the wall, stepping closer to me. His gaze is intense, but the look on his face is hard to decipher. Is it surprise? Recognition? His voice is barely above a whisper.

“This changes things,” he murmurs, almost to himself.

Mariya’s eyes hold a soft warmth. “Your existence is more significant than you know, Jade. Embrace your heritage, and the answers you seek will reveal themselves.”

Moments pass as I struggle to process it all. Then Mariya breaks the silence. “Gabriel, your role in her life is crucial now. You need to protect her.”

He nods solemnly, his gaze never leaving mine. There’s a complexity in his eyes, a myriad of emotions that I can’t quite figure out.

As the ritual concludes, I feel different, like something has shifted within me. Fairy blood? Noble lineage? It feels like I’m in the middle of a movie, but it’s my reality now.

Chapter 19

Gabriel

Mariya breaks the silence. “Hey, Gabriel, how about we let Jade catch her breath for a moment? In the meantime, I need to talk to you about the wards.”

I look at Jade, who still looks stunned. “Will you be okay for a little bit?”

In a bit of a daze, she nods. “Yeah, I’ll be fine, babe.” A shiver runs through me at hearing the term of endearment, and I don’t miss the way Mariya stares at us curiously.

I walk over and kiss Jade on the forehead, “I’ll be right back.”

Then I follow Mariya to my bedroom.

I have barely closed the door when Mariya whirls around and turns all her attention on me. “You are fucking her?”

I shrug, “Mariya. I know you know she is my mate.”

“So, you fucked her?” she folds her arms. “Do you understand how much danger that puts both of you in?”

“I will protect her. It is literally in my job description. Do you really think I would let anything happen to my mate?”

She shakes her head, disappointed in me. “I expected you to at least try to keep your hands off her until I figured out what she is. This complicates everything.”

I swallow the lump forming in my throat. Although I hate to admit it, Mariya has a point. “I thought it was a fluke, Mariya.”

“How is that, Gabriel? I don’t think you understand the gravity of this situation. Jade might be the savior mentioned in the prophecy. And even if she’s not, her blood will be sought after. Fairies are hunted for their magic.”

I try to wrap my head around all of it. “That part I get. What I am wondering is…how can we be mated, Mariya? How will this work? I’m a wolf shifter. Jade’s a fairy.”

Mariya’s face is serious. “It’s happened before.”

“Really?”

“Yes, Gabriel. It has happened before. I know of a beta who once fell in love with a mermaid.”

“I heard about that. I thought that was an urban legend. How would that even work?”

“Well–,” she says, but I interrupt her.

“Never mind. For starters, I am not a beta Mariya. I need a Luna with whom I can build a pack.”

“So that is your fear? That you will not be able to have children with her?”
