“Perfect.”
I spend the rest of the time trying to devise a way to get around Jade’s vigilant surveillance of her best friend.
By the time Mariya hands me the small vial the next day, I have the perfect plan in place. I just need to figure out the opportune time to get it rolling.
Loitering around the hospital, I keep an eye out for Jemma, the nurse Seraphina mentioned. Spotting her, I signal for her to follow me into a utility closet. She nods and joins me, looking young and probably not a day over twenty.
“Hey. Did Seraphina tell you I was coming?” I ask, getting straight to the point.
She nods, her eyes curious. “Yeah, she said you’d be here. Is something wrong?”
“Well, is Jade still there?” I inquire, urgency coloring my tone.
“She hasn’t left Alyssa’s side,” Jemma replies.
“Great. I need about three minutes to get the serum into her. I’d give it to you, but you know, witch contamination risk and all that. Can’t afford that,” I explain, emphasizing the need for caution.
“Of course,” she responds, understanding the gravity of the situation. “Just tell her you’re changing the dressing, and she can take a few minutes to shower. Once she’s in the bathroom, I’ll be in and out.”
“Okay, Protector. I’ll do that,” she assures me before leaving to carry out the plan.
I take a deep breath and wait, the small room feeling smaller with each passing second. After about five minutes, there’s a knock. It’s “go” time. I walk into the room where Alyssa lies still. Her wounds have been bandaged a bit better, but the bruises are still evident.
I grab a needle, preparing to inject her, when another sound freezes me. Jade is humming as she showers. The melody seeps through the door, unexpected and strangely soothing. I’m not sure why it makes me pause, but my heart skips a beat at that moment.
“Are you done?” Jemma asks, pulling me back to reality.
That sobers me. I nod, inject Alyssa, and swiftly make my exit. Rounding the corner, I hear the bathroom door open. The timing is tight, and my pulse quickens.
I blend into the hospital corridors, trying to look inconspicuous. The last thing I need is someone questioning my presence here. As I turn a corner, I catch the muffled sound of Jade’s voice, a soft tune lingering in the air. She must be singing again.
I shake off the distraction, focusing on the task at hand. The serum will do its job, erasing the memories of the recent vampire attack from Alyssa’s mind. It’s a delicate operation, one that requires precision and secrecy. The consequences of failure are too dire to contemplate.
I reach the exit, slipping back into the shadows just as the door to Alyssa’s room opens. Jade steps out, her hair damp, a towel wrapped around her. My gaze lingers momentarily, unintentionally caught by the vulnerability in her eyes. She glances around as if sensing something, but I’m already out of sight.
With a sense of relief, I head back to the utility closet where Jemma is waiting. She looks at me curiously.
“Is it done?” she asks.
I nod, still feeling the echoes of Jade’s humming in my mind. “Yeah, it’s done. Now we wait and see.”
Jemma gives me a small smile, acknowledging the importance of what we’ve done. “Hope it works. For her sake.”
“Me too,” I respond.
Chapter 8
Jade
In the shower, I hear voices, so I decide it’s time to get out. I need to check on Alyssa. I wrap myself in a towel and peek out the bathroom door. I feel as if I’ve just missed something. Or someone.
As I stand there in my towel, feeling anxious, the nurse walks in.
“You left.” I try not to make the accusation evident in my voice. She promised that she would keep an eye on Alyssa as I showered.
“I was right outside the door, Jade. No one could have gotten past me without me knowing.”
I feel a prickling sense that almost threatens to unravel me. I can’t distrust her. She is all I have here. “I am pretty sure I heard some voices when I was in there.”
