“Please! Please make them stop, Jade. Make them stop!” Alyssa pleads, her eyes filled with terror as the medical team tries to subdue her.
Torn between confusion and concern, I assure Alyssa, “They’re trying to help you. You’ll be okay.”
In the midst of the chaos, a nurse swiftly grabs a syringe and injects something into Alyssa’s arm. Before the darkness claims her once more, Alyssa’s final words echo through the room, “It was the vampires, Jade. Don’t let them take me again.”
The room falls into an eerie silence as Alyssa sinks back into unconsciousness. I’m left standing there, stunned.
“What the hell was that?” I question aloud. My mind is racing to comprehend what just happened.
As the medical team disperses, I begin to seek out some answers. I approach a nurse who seems to be in charge, my expression demanding an explanation.
“The fang marks, the screams... what happened to Alyssa?” I inquire, with fear and curiosity in my eyes.
The nurse sighs, her gaze shifting to the floor before meeting my eyes. “We don’t have all the details yet, but it seems Alyssa was attacked. She is suffering from post-traumatic stress, and it seems that is why she is so confused. We’re doing everything we can to keep her stable, and to find out more.”
My disbelief deepens. Vampires? It sounds like a fantastical tale, but the evidence is right there on Alyssa’s neck. I can’t deny what I’ve seen.
First Gabriel turns into a wolf, and now vampire marks?
What in the living hell is happening?
Chapter 7
Gabriel
Islam my fist against the steering wheel, frustration coursing through me like a relentless current. How can Jade not grasp the lengths I’ll go to keep her safe? The weight of my responsibility as a protector of humans feels like a million curses, and I clench my jaw, trying to rein in the anger that threatens to consume me. Eventually, I manage to calm my racing heart before driving home.
Pulling into the driveway, I find Mariya in the kitchen, busy preparing lunch for Liam, who’s engrossed in something on his iPad. I walk over and plant a kiss on his head. “How are you doing, son?”
“Okay, just watching cartoons,” he replies. A wave of relief washes over me. I am so appreciative of these simple moments with my family.
“You’re home early, Gabriel,” Mariya notes, stirring the pot on the stove.
“I had some free time between meetings. Decided to join you guys for lunch.”
“I made plenty of meatballs and spaghetti.”
I settle down at the table, answering a few work emails before immersing myself in the simple pleasure of our family lunch. Yet, beneath the surface, I’m acutely aware that the attack on Alyssa was just the beginning. Something unsettling is unfurling in the city, and I know I need to contact the council… soon.
After lunch, I head to my home office, a space filled with the scent of leather and old books. I reach out to the council, a group of supernatural beings entrusted with maintaining the balance between worlds. As a protector, it’s my duty to keep them informed about any disturbances in the fragile peace that exists between humans and the supernatural.
The holographic screen flickers to life, revealing a stern-faced vampire elder, Seraphina, and a wise and enigmatic werewolf, Lucius. The council’s eyes bore into mine, demanding an explanation for the recent upheaval.
“Gabriel,” Seraphina begins, her voice like silk and steel. “What is the nature of this disturbance you speak of?”
I recount the events surrounding Alyssa’s vampire attack, emphasizing the urgency I sense in the air. Lucius nods thoughtfully, his keen eyes assessing the situation.
“Vampires acting out of line is not unheard of, but there’s an unsettling energy in the air,” Lucius remarks. “We must delve deeper into the matter.”
Seraphina leans forward. “Gabriel, keep a close eye on Jade. The connection she shares with Alyssa might lead us to the source of this disturbance.”
I nod solemnly, accepting the weight of this additional responsibility. The council fades from the holographic screen, leaving me with a lingering sense of urgency and foreboding.
In the following days, I intensify my surveillance of Jade, blending into the shadows, unseen and unheard.
Despite what she told me, I can’t keep away. I can lie to everyone that I am just lurking around to ensure there is no repeat attack, but deep down, I know my motives are also selfish.
I want to see her constantly.
