“Witch,” Mariya concludes, a hint of disappointment in her voice. I feel a pang of sympathy for Jade. She’s been through enough, and this supernatural identity crisis is taking its toll.
As Mariya wraps up the tests, I order the pizza to lighten the mood. Soon, the smell of the cheesy goodness fills the room, providing a welcome distraction. Mariya seems momentarily pleased as she indulges in a slice, but the mystery surrounding Jade’s supernatural nature remains unsolved.
I sit beside Jade, offering a reassuring smile. “We’ll figure this out,” I tell her, hoping to ease the uncertainty in her eyes.
The next round of tests involves Mariya delving into more complex rituals. Symbols are drawn, herbs are mixed, and Jade undergoes a series of magical scans. Each time Mariya draws blood, I cringe, Jade winces, and I feel a deep sense of regret. I never wanted her involved in this supernatural chaos.
As the day progresses, the sun begins to set, casting a warm glow across the room. Mariya, determined as ever, continues her investigation. The pizza box is pushed aside, forgotten in the pursuit of uncovering this mystery.
I watch Jade, sitting there with a patience I admire. Mariya, on the other hand, wears an expression of intense concentration. The room is alive with mystical energy, and I am hopeful with each spell and incantation that it will bring us the answers we seek.
Mariya’s eyes light up as she thinks of another possibility. “Could you be a fae?” she wonders aloud, her gaze fixed on Jade. The idea hangs in the air, and I can sense Jade’s anticipation as Mariya performs a ritual specific to the fae.
Unfortunately, the results are inconclusive, leaving us back at square one. Jade, tired and frustrated, looks at me with desperation. I wish I had the answers for her.
The night deepens, and Mariya decides to take a break. We gather in the living room, surrounded by the remnants of magical experiments. Despite the uncertainty, Jade manages a small smile.
“I appreciate you both trying to help me with this,” she says gratefully.
“We won’t give up,” I assure her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “We’ll keep searching until we find out what you are.”
Mariya nods in agreement. “We’ve ruled out a few possibilities, but there’s still much to explore. Tomorrow is a new day.”
As we gather around the dinner table, I notice that Jade seems much calmer now, as if she’s adjusting to the supernatural bombshells we’ve dropped on her. The news of her unknown supernatural identity and the ongoing tests somehow hasn’t rattled her as much as I expected. It’s a relief to see her taking things in stride.
During our meal, my phone buzzes, and I excuse myself to take the call from Seraphina. She informs me about an upcoming alliance gathering, and something catches my attention — the bear shifters are joining the alliance because of a prophecy. The mention of a prophecy immediately sets off alarm bells in my mind.
“Are they seriously believing this nonsense?” I ask.
“It is not nonsense. It is a cause with a cult-like following. We must quash this, or we will be in real trouble soon.”
When I return to the table, Mariya senses my agitation. I take a deep breath and decide it’s time to share the news with them.
“Guys, we need to talk,” I begin, my voice grave. “There’s a prophecy circulating among all supernaturals that’s causing quite a stir.”
Their eyes widen as I tell the tale of the prophecy. I recount the story of Niall, the fairy leader, who defied the rules and fell in love with a human, Erynn. The tragic separation, the battle for survival, and the heart-wrenching demise of both Niall and Erynn.
“Their child,” I continue, “grew up unaware of her royal bloodline and the supernatural world. The prophecy speaks of this child as the savior, the messiah who will bring change to the supernatural realm.”
As I share the details, the silence in the room becomes palpable. Jade listens intently, while Mariya tries to pass peas to Liam’s plate. He is too distracted to pay attention to anything.
“But there’s a problem. The supernatural beings believe this savior will be revealed soon, and they’re becoming reckless. Human lives are now in danger. There is a delicate balance between our worlds, and it is at risk. Some of these supernaturals think they can kill humans without repercussions because of the prophecy and their belief that they are superior.”
For a moment, no one speaks. Then, Mariya, ever insightful, breaks the silence with a question. “What does this mean for us? For Jade? Are we in danger if we don’t subscribe to this belief?”
I run a hand through my hair. “I’m not sure, but we need to be cautious. This gathering is critical. We must figure out how to navigate this prophecy and protect both the supernatural and human worlds.”
“Okay! I will strengthen the wards tomorrow.”
Chapter 16
Jade
Islump into bed, feeling utterly drained and exhausted. Mariya’s relentless tests have left me with a throbbing headache, and fatigue has settled in. I’ve just managed to crawl under the covers when a knock interrupts the quiet of my room.
I drag myself out of bed and open the door to find Gabriel standing there. He’s in low-waisted sweatpants and a t-shirt, a comforting sight. In his hand, he holds a glass of water.
“Hey,” he greets me, concern etched on his face. “I thought you might need this.”
