That went well.

My wolf snorted. She is just mad that we are the highest-ranking female now.

Or maybe she’s just a bitch.

I moved through the center of town, waving to pack members I recognized, but the crowd thinned as I made my way east into a dense section of the forest.

The eastern region of Hidden Creek was adjacent to unsanctioned territory. Our borders were strong, and the Enforcers kept a tight rotation schedule, but I couldn’t shake the feeling I was being watched.

Silence descended over the woods, and my skin crawled at the harrowing absence of sound.

I was positive I should have heard the distinct sounds of construction by then.

“Hello?” I called, taking a single, hesitant step forward.

Nothing.

Turn around, my wolf warned.

I spun around, preparing to flee, and froze.

A male stood in my path—the one who intercepted me and Winnie on our way home weeks ago. He sneered, blocking my path, and I stepped back, heart pounding.

A snap sounded to my right. I angled my body so I could keep my eye on him while assessing my surroundings, but my blood ran cold when I spotted another wolf.

A burly male with unkempt brown hair joined us. “Where do you think you’re going, little breeder?”

My voice was surprisingly strong as I asked, “What do you want?”

A tingle crept up my spine, warning me of another wolf, and I growled as a third male stepped onto the path. He was thinner than the other two, the hollows of his cheeks so sunken it made him seem skeletal. Long black hair hung down his back, the thin strands swaying as he closed the distance between us.

I was surrounded.

“What do you want?” I shouted.

The first male laughed as the other two moved closer. No matter which way I ran, they would catch me.

I snarled, and the thin one laughed, the scraping sound setting my teeth on edge.

They would take me.

But they wouldn’t do so without a fight.

They lunged, working as a unit to cut off any chance of escape. I tried to run, but hands grabbed me. I screamed and bit, raking my claws over their limbs. They pinned my arms and covered my mouth, but I kicked out, grunting in satisfaction when someone buckled.

“Bitch,” someone cursed, kicking my side with a viciousness that brought me to my knees.

“Hold her still,” cried another.

My back hit the ground.

I reached for my bond, using all my energy to call for my mates as I yanked my face away from their palms.

A flash of blond hair peeked through the trees as my head snapped back, cracking against the ground, and my world went dark.
