I laughed along, but confusion filled me. This is what had worried me since this morning. I was an alpha werewolf, and my blood was stronger than most. I could drink a full bottle of wine and it would not affect me.

“I have always been able to handle alcohol. Wine is like drinking juice,” I processed out loud. Something must have been in the wine to affect me that way.Had she been drugged?I growled inwardly, thinking of someone trying to hurt what was mine.

“That certainly wasn’t the case last night.” I could see her smile had grown serious as if she was thinking what I was.

“Alexandra, did you leave your drink unattended for even the smallest amount of time last night?” I asked, standing up from the bed. I felt my blood boil thinking what would have happened to her beautiful petite body had she drank the poison.

“Not that I can remember.” Her brows crinkled as she focused.

“Think carefully. Perhaps someone tried to talk to you, and your attention was diverted for a second or you went to the restroom for a couple of minutes? Something must have happened.”

“Are you suggesting my drink was roofied?” she asked, her voice getting faint. I could see worry on her face as she began to think. If her drink was drugged, something was wrong. Was this a predator selecting her at random, or was this a staged attack? She could be in danger.

“That could be the case.”

“Someone tried to talk to me five or ten minutes before I saw you staring. I turned to talk to him, and anyone could have done anything to my drink behind my back.”

I felt anger rising in my chest as I heard her say those words. I should have seen something. I would look at the security footage first thing when I got back. The possibility of her being drugged made my blood boil, and I felt a protective urge rise. It felt as if my heart and mind already knew she was my destined mate. Mine. Alexandra Silvers was my destined mate, but this was a reality she wouldn’t understand.

You have only known her for half a day!I shouted at myself in my head. It was unbelievable how fast this was happening.

She could very well be my destined mate, but that was something she could never know. She wouldn’t believe me. She would think I was crazy if I said something like that right now. I needed to get to know her better.

But why would someone drug her drink? The list of reasons coming to my head only made me angrier and more concerned, and I knew I needed to stop thinking about this and simply make sure she was safe and protected. I wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

“So, it’s a possibility your drink was roofied.” I sighed and sat on the bed. I looked at her face, which had paled as she worried about the whole thing.

“Yes.”

“Alexandra, is someone after you? Maybe you know who could have done this?”

“I don’t know.” Her voice was soft and mysterious as if she was trying very hard to keep her emotions under control.

What’s wrong?

She was more worried than I had expected, as if she was hiding something. When I had asked her to tell me about her life, she had told me the bare minimum, as if keeping her identity a mystery was a necessity. It’s not that I couldn't have gotten information about her with the snap of my fingers, but I wanted to get to know Alexandra the old-fashioned way… without a detailed report from my hackers.

She grasped the covers to her chest, her eyes cast downward. I moved toward her, placing my hand on her knee, but she flinched. Her reaction only worried me even more.

“What’s the matter, Alexandra?” I pleaded softly.

“Nothing.” She shook her head, still refusing to say anything.

“Something is amiss. You are closing off, and I can see it. Is there something you aren’t telling me?” Her expression clouded, making it clear that my questions were unwelcome. Something was bothering her, and she was keeping it from me.

“I don't know anything about you, Sebastian. You’re just a stranger I met at a hotel bar, and we had a good time. Thank you for sticking around and bringing me breakfast, but you can leave now. You don’t have to stay here and pretend you care about me or who drugged my drink.”

Her words were a cold slap to my face but I remained silent, not wanting to cause her more pain. I had no intention of leaving her alone, even if that’s what she wanted. I couldn’t leave her now that I knew she was my destined mate. I should have known last night when I saw her because I had never felt that sort of pull with another woman. And now, with my mark affixed to her petite form, I longed to make the bond complete and permanent.

“Alexandra, don’t push me away,” I reassured her, as I stood from her bed.

“I’m not. I’m asking you to leave my hotel room.”

She got up from the bed, the sheets still wrapped tightly around her as if she could no longer be naked in front of me. I shook my head, unable to understand why she was suddenly being so cold but knowing I needed to leave.

“I’m only trying to help. I genuinely care if you’re in trouble. Let me be there for you.” I kept my voice soft, not wanting to anger her. She seemed irrational right now, and I needed to make sure she remained safe. That was my only priority, but her safety is something I can’t ensure if I leave.

“I don’t need your help, Sebastian,” she sighs. “I’m not trying to be rude or thankless, but you need to leave me alone.”
