Chapter 1?—
The farmhouse looked like something from a story book. A large wraparound porch with a swing in one corner beckoned her, while the bright red flowers bobbing along in clean rows in front of the porch added pops of color against the dark wood. Kayla hopped from her truck and tented a hand over her eyes while letting out a low whistle. She was getting to stay here, with free room and board for three whole weeks? And all she had to do was help out with ranch work? How had she not come here sooner?
Even the weather seemed intent on impressing her with a gentle breeze that fluttered her bangs and flapped her bohemian shirt against her skin.
An older man and woman stepped out of the house and approached Kayla as another car bounced down the gravel drive.
“You must be Kayla.” The woman wrapped her up in a tight hug. “Welcome to the Double G. I’m Gina and this is my husband Gary.”
“Thank you.” Kayla returned the hug. “I’m so glad to be here.”
A man stepped out of the car and frowned. His gaze roamed over the house and pastures before flitting briefly over Kayla.
Mercy. Her heart gave a hard kick at the man’s attractive good looks. She prided herself on looking deeper than superficial beauty but between his close-cropped brown hair, dark eyes, andthe perfectly trimmed beard, she felt herself going slightly weak in the knees.
“Ah, Grayson. Right on time.” Gary chuckled and stuck out his hand to Grayson and then Kayla. “I’ll give you both a quick tour and get you started. You both said you wanted to jump right into the action, so that’s what we’ll do.”
“It’s a good thing you wore comfortable clothes. Always a good sign when our guests follow the instructions in the guidebook.” Gina
A bubble of excitement tickled her stomach. The ranch experience was what she’d asked for when she filled out the survey, but now that she was here, it all felt a teensy bit overwhelming.
Oh well. She’d never been one to back away from a challenge. “This will be so much fun.” She clapped her hands and shot Grayson a wide smile that he met with an even deeper frown.
Great. Three weeks at a working ranch with a grump. Not what she’d signed up for but she’d find a way to make it work.
Gary motioned for them to join him. “You can leave your bags in your vehicles. We’ll grab them later.”
“Don’t keep them out too long,” Gina called out. “I want to show them around the house before dinner.”
Kayla followed along beside Gary as he led them toward a massive A-frame barn with a loft at the top. Two men and a woman hurried back and forth from the barn to a nearby pasture, leading horses into the barn.
