“Ohhhkay. Why not?”

“Because we’re not really a couple.”

“But you’ve already had sex once. What’s the harm in going again?”

“Come on, Soph. You know that makes things complicated.”

“Honey, things are complicated already, aren’t they? I mean, you’re lying to everyone in your life, and his life, and you’re working together in your family business, and you’re living together…”

“All things he pointed out.”

“So what’s the harm in a little more complication? Especially when it feels so good?”

“Even if I agreed with you, and I’m not saying I do, he doesn’t. I mean, I don’t even know if he…”

“Yes?”

“Enjoyed it,” she said, taking a large gulp of champagne and looking beseechingly at Sophie. “I mean, couldn’t that be why he immediately turned around and said it couldn’t happen again? Is it possible it was a bad experience for him?”

“I mean, maybe,” Sophie shrugged. “But in my experience, it’s way less likely to be a downer for a dude.”

Andie’s brows shot up. “Gee, thanks. I feel so reassured.”

“Did he finish?”

Andie’s face flushed. She nodded.

“Great. So, he enjoyed it.”

“But I mean, maybe he’s had better. I mean, for sure he has. God, he could be off having better right now. I have no idea. I mean, we’re not a couple. This is actually crazy.”

Sophie reached over, pressing a finger to Andie’s lips. “Stop driving yourself mad. You just need to talk to him.”

“I can’t talk to him.”

“Andie, you’re one of the most confident and driven people I know. You were running a multinational company while nursing your mom and holding your brother’s hand and your dad’s life together, while everyone else our age was off at keggers. You’ve got this.”

“That’s work, and family, it’s not guys. And Max isn’t like…a normal guy. He’s so…”

“So?”

“Just so much. Like he’s too handsome and too arrogant and too smart and too assessing. He’s not someone you can just pull up a chair next to and start chatting about your relationship.”

“Well, you had sex with him, so there must be something going for the guy.”

“That’s just sex.”

“Talk to him.”

“I can’t.”

“Then seduce him.”

Andie’s jaw dropped. “Yeah, right. How?”

“Whatever you were doing in the first place clearly worked wonders.”

“We were fighting.”
