“So, what happened with the incredible hulk last night?” He dropped into a chair and swung his leg over the arm.
“Didn’t you drive me home?” I asked, feeling my brows knit together. “We didn’t talk about it?”
“Um, no. You fell asleep putting your seat belt on, and I had to drag you out of the car and into the house.” He looked me over. “Obviously you were a mess.”
I looked down and realized for the first time that I was still wearing my dress under my robe.
“Are you sure I only had three glasses of wine?” I asked, feeling my cheeks flush in embarrassment.
“God, no,” he said, rolling his eyes. “You probably had at least seven. You must have just lost count at three.”
I groaned and took another sip of my soda. It was already starting to make the dull ache in my head recede.
“So,” Geoff said, sliding forward on the chair and staring at me. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” I insisted. “I mean…I kissed him. But that’s it. Obviously. I mean, you brought me home.”
“Did you propose to him?” he teased.
“No!” I rolled my eyes. “Look, I was drunk and it was just an innocent little kiss. I mean, I don’t even know his name. It was just one of those things that happens and we never, ever talk about again.”
“I don’t know,” he said, getting to his feet. “Joshua couldn’t take his eyes off you either.”
Joshua? So that was his name. I said it a few more times in my head, then smiled. It suited him.
“You’re in love!” Geoff said, pointing at me and grinning.
“Oh, for Pete’s sake!” I shook my head. “I don’t even know him. Thank you for my soda, will you please go now?”
Geoff put his hands up in a defensive motion then stood and walked to the door. He paused with his hand on the handle and turned back to me.
“You know, I warned him that you were drunk last night. It says a lot about a guy that he wouldn’t press his advantage with a woman he clearly liked. If you do decide to marry him, you have my blessing.”
“Out!” I pointed at the door and flipped off his back as he left.
My phone buzzed and I looked down to see a text from my sister. It was Joshua’s phone number. I saved it to my contacts, just in case I ever did need to move that sofa, then took my diet coke into the bathroom with me.
I needed a shower and a mindset shift. I would not spend the rest of my life obsessing over an unattainable guy. No matter how handsome and sweet he had been.
Chapter Four
~Joshua~
I hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep since Saturday night and I was in a bear of a mood when I stormed into the office Monday morning.
She hadn’t called me. She’d kissed me, then run off like Cinderella about to turn into a pumpkin, then didn’t call.
When I’d talked to Tommy, it had irritated me that he wouldn’t give me her number. Finally, I realized that he was just protecting his new sister-in-law. Yes, he knew me and knew I wasn’t a weirdo, but it was fair to offer to give September my phone number and let her call me. I didn’t like it, but I understood.
Except, she hadn’t called me. And I didn’t know how to find her.
Yet.
The men in the office seemed to feel the irritation in the air around me, and they all scattered as I stormed through the bullpen into my office. I slammed the door and opened my laptop, ready to do some almost-legal research about my future bride.
When she’d kissed me, her soft lips so sweet, the soft curve of her body pressed against my arm, I’d lost it. She was mine, even if she didn’t know it yet.
I’d actually considered coming into the office on Sunday to start my search for her, since we had access to personal information I couldn’t get into from home. But I’d wanted to give her a chance to contact me.
