Rose and Lachlan were both on their computers, while Preston was having a cup of coffee.

“Did you get some sleep?” Preston asked.

Kailani nodded but focused on Selene, whose serious expression made Kailani’s stomach muscles tight with worry.

“I did.”

“If you’re ready, I am. We can start.” Preston raised his cup, taking a long final sip.

The inventory. Shit.

“Preston…I can’t.”

That got Lachlan’s attention. “Is there a problem?”

“Benjamin and John…they’re both gone.”

“Gone as in missing?” Rose asked.

“No. No, they… They left.”

“Ah, I’m sorry,” Preston said softly.

Kailani looked down at her hands. Her fingers clenched tightly in a fist, as if she was bracing for a physical fight. “They’re my trinity and—”

“No, they’re not.” Selene, phone call apparently over, joined them at the conference table.

“You shouldn’t have dissolved it,” Kailani told her.

“Why not? Benjamin asked for it. I thought you wanted it gone. It was a crazy match anyway. You and Benjamin have way too much history.”

“We do… No, we did. Past tense. We were working through it. John…John made us work.”

“Your trinity is dissolved.” Selene raised a brow. “I did it as a favor to you since you’re a keyholder and you would have done it yourself if you’d become Grand Master.”

Rose snorted as if that was amusing, though Kailani didn’t know why.

“I wouldn’t have,” Kailani said.

“Then why didn’t you say something when I made the proclamation?” Selene spread her hands in the air.

Lachlan mouthed “proclamation,” the corner of his mouth ticked up in a grin.

“I was waiting for Benjamin to say something because I didn’t want to force him into—” Kailani cut herself off, shaking her head. “Selene, Grand Master, I just came to let you know I’m leaving for a few days.”

“No, you’re not.” Selene smiled slightly, but it wasn’t a joke.

“I have to go after—”

“You have to finish the inventory,” the Grand Master said.

Kailani shook her head. “Please, they’re my trinity—”

“They’re not.” Selene was merciless.

“Dammit, please. I love them!” Kailani snapped. “I love them, and I’m going no matter what you say!”

Lachlan pushed back from the table. A silent threat. Kailani felt like the walls were closing in.
