“Oahu, Hawaii.”

“Makes perfect sense for a backup Batcave,” Selene declared. Then her face went slack. “Oh dammit…where is my key?”

Kailani’s heart stopped beating. “You…you don’t have it?”

“I have it. I do.”

That was not reassuring.

“Can I ask what’s going on?” The man in glasses was standing right beside them, but somehow Kailani hadn’t really noticed him. He had a lovely accent, and when she looked at him, he was objectively good-looking, which made it all that much odder that she hadn’t noticed him.

“I’ll explain.” John stepped forward.

“John…” Kailani looked at him, a lifetime of keeping this secret, of protecting the very existence of the keyholders and their existence, never mind the location of the waihona, balking at the idea of sharing those secrets.

“I’m going to find the key.” Selene raced for the stairs.

“You’re her husband?” John asked the man in glasses.

“Luca,” he said, holding out his hand.

“And the big grumpy dude?”

“Our husband Oscar,” Luca confirmed.

“You’re both going to want to hear this, and then one of you will need to go pack for all three of you.”

“John…” Kailani said again.

“They’re her trinity,” John replied. “Besides, this is now essentially a joint task force operation, and the only way to run an effective task force is to have all members working with the same information.”

Luca’s brows rose, but he turned away, returning a moment later with Oscar.

“What fresh hell is this?” Oscar demanded.

“The Trinity Masters is under attack,” John said succinctly. “The Grand Master is MIA, which triggered a designated survivor fail-safe.”

Both Oscar and Luca stiffened, but neither interrupted as John continued.

“The Trinity Masters set up a secret treasury, or vault, or whatever you want to call it. Whatever’s inside is supposed to be enough to ensure the survival of the society, in case the current leadership and/or the headquarters in Boston are destroyed.”

“What does this have to do with Selene?” Oscar demanded. “If you think she had something to do with the attack—”

Kailani frowned. “No, no, of course not. Why would we think she was part of the attack?”

“Er…no reason. Go on.”

Kailani eyed the two men suspiciously.

“Why are you here?” Luca asked, his tone making it mere inquiry rather than accusation.

Kailani realized it was too late to turn back now, and even if this trinity was a bit shady, Selene was the keyholder, so there was nothing to do but follow through with her duty.

“It takes three keys to open the waihona,” Kailani explained, accepting that this wasn’t a secret she could keep from these two men. “Three keys that have been passed down through the generations, within legacy families.”

Oscar looked to the stairs. “Selene has one of them?”

“Yes. She needs…actually, probably all three of you need to come with us, right now. The sooner we get there, the sooner we know who the acting Grand Master is.”
