CHAPTER 11
DANI
The dayafter our night together, everyone had arrived at the house and settled in.
It’d been fun even.
The girls and I went swimming while the guys grilled and enjoyed a couple of beers. It was been laid back, and when the temperature dropped a little, we all sat around a firepit and the guys even played music together. Reminiscing of the old days. The good times. They all got along together. Jax behaved and didn’t made one snarky remark.
Now, at the stadium in Vegas for rehearsals and soundcheck, I was looking for Jax but got turned around.
One hallway looked like another, and just as I was about to open one of the dressing room doors, I heard it. The band sans Jax were in there talking.
“I don’t know, man. They look pretty happy.” Mason’s words stopped me in the hall. I pulled my hand back from the door like it had burned me. I wasn’t the kind of woman who liked to eavesdrop, but there was something about his tone that had my feet nailed to the ground.
“All I know is it’s all for show. Jax told me,” Crue said. All for show?
“For show? Jax said that?” Mason asked.
“Not like that… but it’s an arrangement. She scratches his back, and Jax scratches her back kinda deal. He’s going to help her open a bakery or restaurant or something.”
“Really? A marriage of convenience?”
“You know the way Jax is. He hates the press. This was supposed to help keep them and the fans away.”
“Shit, doesn’t he know that a wedding ring is like catnip for the crazy ones?” one of the guys asked, but I was too dizzy to make out which one before they chuckled.
“Either way, you guys need to shut up. The last thing we need is for that writer?—"
“Liam,” Mason corrected.
“For Liam to find out about our bad boy’s marriage of convenience. Imagine the shit show that would be?” I could almost see the grimace on Crue’s face.
“I don’t know, man. I’m not so sure it’s a lie. I mean, we’ve known Jax since we were teenagers. Have you seen how he looks at her? How much he has changed? I think it’s the real deal.”
“Who knows. Either way, keep it quiet. We don’t need the drama from the press,” Crue warned the guys, and they all grunted in agreement.
I turned quietly and started to walk, not really paying attention to where I was going. I waved and smiled at those who said hi, but I was too deep in my head to notice much. The guys hadn’t said anything I didn’t already know.
They weren’t lying.
My marriage was an arrangement between Jax and me. I had just foolishly and naively started to believe it had changed. That it had turned into something more.
I turned around and bumped right into the man I had stupidly fallen in love with.
“Shit! I’m sorry,” I rambled. My hands had a mind of their own as they rested on his broad chest. He was wearing another black tee and jeans with black boots.
“Hey. There you are.” Jax smiled and leaned in close. “I’ve been looking for you,” he whispered against my lips, and like a fool, I kissed him back. I couldn’t help it. I loved his talented mouth.
“You have?” I asked breathily when we pulled back. I gazed up at him, searching his face for a hint of something. Was this closeness just for the time being? Is it just for show?An itch we were both scratching?
We’re making love. His words drifted into my head, and I wanted to cling to them. How many times had he said that to me? The guys didn’t know what was happening between us. They didn’t know that our marriage might have started out as a marriage of convenience, but it had changed. Right?
You don’t know he wants more either, the practical side of me whispered.
“Dani?” His head tilted, and I shook my head.
“You were looking for me?”
