Umbra moved faster than I thought possible, taking the steps in fours as he threw himself after them. There was nothing human left in his expression.
Then I caught sight of Dusk.
What were they doing here?
He made for me, but I took a few steps back, that flicker of hope snuffed out as panic seized me.
I gripped my shirt, terrified. He could never see the bites.
The truth.
What they’d done.
Dusk drew up, seeing my fear, holding his hand up as if in surrender.
His aura wavered, furious, threatening.
I couldn’t focus.
They were here. Not to save me… To tell me I wasn’t even enough for them anymore. I knew it.
“Shatter…” Dusk’s voice was broken.
Another whine rose in my throat at the sound of my name.
He closed the distance at that sound, drawing me against him. And I wanted to lean into that touch. To let it sweep me up and carry me back to my nest.
But…
“You… you can’t.” The words left me as hollow as they sounded. Still, he drew me closer.
I lashed out as he tried to wrap his arms around me, my nails catching his cheek.
I didn’t want this. For him to pretend, only to take it away once he saw what they’d done. The fissure in my sanity cracked further, but he didn’t let me go as I slammed my fists against him, a scream in my chest as I tried to get away.
I couldn’t do it…
And then I caught lily of the valley, and another set of hands dragged me from Dusk.
Ransom…?
Ransom was here?
Awake.
I sobbed.
Too late…
Too late…
“Shatter?” His voice was low, melodic. As beautiful as he was. “My omega.”
Finally, tears flooded my cheeks as I shook my head.
No.
Not anymore.
