SHATTER

AnotherBANGfrom the room on the balcony made me jump.

I should check on that.

I stared at the locked door above, heart pounding, mind racing a million miles a minute. I’d just spent Lord knows how much time making sure Dusk and Umbra were safe. Now they were both wrapped up in blankets, their auras stable.

That noise couldn’t be either of them—Umbra was still peacefully vacant in the omega bond I had. He was sleeping, just like Dusk was resting on a bed of pillows in the kitchen before me.

I was trying to catch up with what happened, and my pulse was still erratic.

I’d come out of the bathroom of the club to find Dusk gone. It had been so unexpected, I’d hurried out of the front doors, alarm bells going off in my head. There, I’d found him doubled over on the pathway, body shaking, aura flickering in and out.

Never had I evenreadabout something like this, let alone seen it. He had been dying, I’d known it in my gut. There was something so, so wrong with what had happened to both him and Umbra… It was more than sickness… It was unnatural.

If I was being honest, I had no idea how I’d fixed it.

But now, they were both asleep.

That noise couldnothave been them.

The clinical side of my brain had already done the calculation, but it was just so wildly unbelievable that I was having a hard time processing it.

Because if that wasn’t Umbra or Dusk, then there was only one person it could be, and that was—A KNOCK sounded at the front door, making me jump.

I spun, staring at it, then scrambled to look through the peephole. My heart bottomed out of my chest.

Flynn Lincoln was standing outside.

“One… one second!” I called. I pressed my back against the door, absolutely unsure.

Flynnwas here?

Everything I’d just been thinking about running to.

My mate was outside. Right. Now.

Instead of elation, I felt a sense of dread creeping up my spine.

What about the sound upstairs? I couldn’t just leave, right? My mind thought wildly to the registration card in my pencil case—which reminded me I needed to grab that before I even thought of leaving.

Stupid.

Stupid and rushed and…damn it, I wasn’t ready.

But if Flynn caught my scent and knew I was his match, I’d never be able to check on that room.

I ran to the kitchen, almost tripping over Dusk, and opened his drug drawer. In it was a bottle of scent-dampening spray. It wasn’t as long-lasting as the pills, but it was enough for now.

I sprayed it all over myself and the whole kitchen, almost choking on the thick mist.

The knock sounded again.

“Be there in a minute!”I called.

I wasn’t giving up on my mates. I could wash this off and go back to them. After. After I’d checked the room and made sure everyone was safe.
