I was afraid of what she was scared of me seeing.

Finally, I reached the last layer, a long sleeve button-up, and massively oversized.

She clutched the hem down, with short sharp breaths from her nose as her eyes fixed on the ceiling. She still had the other shirt wrapped around her neck.

“Show me.”

She shut her eyes at the command, fingers trembling on the first button. She undid it, but didn’t open it.

Her breath caught, her eyes on the ceiling as her chin quivered.

“When I came to your room, I wanted to…” Her voice caught. “I wanted to tell you I chose…” Her voice broke beyond repair.

Relief flooded my heart as I heard her speak, even if the words broke my heart.

She’d been about to reject them.

To choose us.

“I read… some of the documents…” Her voice caught. “And I know you only wanted me because I could f-fix Ransom…”

I froze.

“And I just… I was just… I was just looking for Roxy. I was s-so confused.”

I shut my eyes, fingers tangling in hers again as I held her tight.

“Shatter…”Shit. That’s why she’d left? It all clicked. If she’d read the notes I’d just made…

“But you…” Her voice was cracked and hollow. “You won’t… you won’t want me. Not even to dark bond me.”

No…

“I never wanted that,” I whispered.

Fuck.

Why hadn’t she told me she’d seen them?

But… She must have been terrified that if she told me she knew I would bite her right then.

“I swear to you, Decebal found those files today.”

There was a long, long silence as she stared at me, then a broken sob shook her whole frame. “It’s too late. H-He said, no alpha is ever going t-to… to want me ever again.”

I reached up, cupping her cheek. “Nothinghas changed, Shatter,” I told her. “Not since the day I met you.”

“You won’t…” Her words were breathless, and her eyes darted to the door. “I c-can’t. You don’t understand.” Another whine shook her. “Y-you don’t know what they’ve… th-they’ve?—”

“You think I care if they’ve marked you?” I asked. She thought I didn’t know what they were capable of.

They had, I knew that much. I knew it by her terror.

She thought I cared about that? As if the Lincoln pack weren’t already a bleeding scar across my entire fucking life.

“I told you I love you?—”

I cut off as a strangled sound tore from her. Her grip became vicious and she tried to pull away, true panic in her eyes.
