“DUSK!”Umbra’s voice from behind me sounded urgent. I spun, taking a step back to see Umbra was still at the door, picking something up from the floor.
At his feet were scattered the insides of Shatter’s pencil case, and in his hand was her registration card.
She wouldn’t have left that, not unless she was terrified.
I would kill them.
I would tear them limb from limb. Peel their skin from flesh and watch them bleed. I would listen to their screams until they died down to nothing.
But Shatter came first.
SHATTER
It was a cool evening, chilly droplets cascaded around me, shimmering in the dim light of the academy grounds. The wet pathways glistened beneath my boots.
There was nothing left for me.
Dusk had been right. I choked back my sob. He’d been right, and I still didn’t know if anything had been real between me andhim. Even… even if it had been, they would never take me back now.
Their necklace was gone.
I was marked by other alphas.
Alphas he hated.
There was nothing left for me here.
Could I go back to the Estate? Beg Uncle and Aunty Lauren to take me back? Would they? Or would they send me to the Institute if I showed my face there again?
I sank to my knees on a garden pathway, body trembling.
My mates.
I never…I let out a low, pained sound.I never wanted to see them again.
Or think about them.
Not ever.
This shouldn’t have happened.
They should never have been able to hurt me like that…
And Uncle was their sponsor…
Would he blame me for this?
Could I try to make it on my own?
I had the set of contacts in my eyes right now, but even my registration card was gone. My teeth chattered in the cold air as the truth hit in full force.
Eric was right. Dusk, Umbra and Ransom would never want me, even if it had been real…
I’d given up the safety of the Estate. I’d given up the Kingsman pack.
And they were cruel and horrible.
Footsteps thundered, and I looked up.
