Dusk… knew?
For how long?
Claiming me at the ball. Playing into my deepest fears. Whispering worship—and had he known where I’d come from and what I was missing?
My hand jumped to my mouth.
A fix for Ransom—was that all I’d ever been?
A cure.
A pill.
An experiment.
Not worth anything beyond what my broken body could do…
But… I’d come in here to tell him the impossible, a truth enough to rip my world in two. Without answers, just a confession and trust that he might be able to find a solution.
I’d come to tell him that I chosehispack.
That I’d chosen him.
That dream was turning to stone—not at all what I believed it was. Not if he’d known. He’d pretended all this time, knowing it could only end in a dark bond.
There was more here—a whole folder of information. I had to read it. Would it have answers?—
“Shatter.”I jumped as I heard Dusk’s voice from down the hall.
He was back.
“Shit…”I dropped the file, digging fingers into my scalp as I got to my feet, my breathing ragged. If he knew I’d read this, what would he do?
I needed… I needed help. This was all too much.
Roxy.
She’d said I could come to her with anything.
I managed to take a few steps back before I heard him calling for me again, sounding urgent.
I fixed my expression just in time to see him appear at the doorway. His eyes were wide and he looked frantic.
“Shatter!”He stepped toward me and it was hard not to stumble back. “I thought…Fuck.”
“Are you okay?” I asked, forcing my voice steady.
What did I do?
I had to make an excuse to get to Roxy.
“Yes, I…” His eyes fell on the papers on the bed and he frowned.
“I just got in,” I said quickly. “I was looking for you.”
“So was I. We need to talk.”
Talk…?I tried very hard not to look back at the bed. To give away what I’d just read.
