“Sorry.” I shrug.
“Your mom is great. Really. We can’t expect everyone to understand the lifestyle.”
“I’m still not completely sure I understand it either.” I admit.
“You’re doing great! You’ll get the hang of it in no time. Besides, that sweet baby’s daddy will make sure you’re well informed.” She nods at my stomach.
“Oh, I’m not...” I start but she holds up a hand.
“You never have to lie to me, Andi. We’re friends. And I’ll keep your secret for as long as you need me to.”
“Thank you.” I whisper as we hear the kids coming through the door.
“Who wants to go to the movies?” She asks as they all come running in.
They all yell at once, excited for the chance to go watch something in the theater for a change. The girls run to their rooms to change clothes since they were back to working on their fort and got dirty.
Ten minutes later, I wave them off from the porch and smile as they all bounce around in the minivan Mina drove today. She must be using it to pick up all the kids before she leaves them with the poor prospects that have to watch them.
“You’re so much happier here.” Mom’s voice draws my eyes to her.
“What makes you say that?”
“That smile on your face. You absolutely glow.” She answers.
Thinking about it, I’d have to agree with her. I am happy here. I love all the new friends I’m making. I’m also extremely nervous about losing it all.
Will Mina also hate me because Gabe never knew about his girls?
She, just as all the other girls from the club I’ve met, is fiercely loyal to the club and all the people attached to it.
Now that I’ve had a taste of what that feels like, I don’t want to lose it over some stupid decision that was made so long ago.
With a deep sigh, I walk back in the house. He’ll be home soon and I need to tell him as soon as he gets here. Then I’ll know where I stand and if I need to pack up the girls to leave White Summer behind.
