“Yeah, Daddy. With paper mash.”
I chuckle. “I think you mean papier-mâché.”
“Yeah.” I can’t see him, but I know he’s nodding.
“Well, I can’t wait to see it when I get home.”
“You can’t see it!”
“And why not?”
“Because it’s not dry.”
“I can’t see it if it’s not dry?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s not dry,” he says as if that explains everything.
I laugh. “Okay, I’ll wait until it’s dry before I see it.”
“Yes,” he says, and I can tell he is done talking with me.
A second later Naomi’s voice comes over the phone. “He’s very proud of his volcano.”
“I can tell.”
“So is there any reason you needed an emergency dose of Ethan?”
“Yeah, I had to deal with some unpleasantness and needed to balance it out.”
“Oh no. I hope it’s nothing serious.”
“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll keep an eye on it.”
“Well, I am not sure how I could possibly help, but if there’s anything I can ever do, please let me know.”
“Well, you never know…I’ll tell you about it sometime. Perhaps you’ll have some insights that I haven’t considered.”
“Okay… I look forward to that…”
“Great…”
There’s dead air on the line for a moment, then Naomi says, “Anyway, I should get back to Ethan. I don’t think he likes that my attention is divided.”
I laugh. “Of course. I’ll let you go.”
We say our goodbyes then end the call.
I can feel it. We are wading into dangerous territory. Whatever is going on between us, as much as I would like to pretend, is not just physical. Feelings are starting to develop. The best thing to do now would be to end everything between us that isn’t business.
But I don’t think I could do that, even if I tried.
Now that I’ve gotten a taste of Naomi, there’s no way I’m ever going to be able to stop.
The thought is terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.
