Recently, Jamie has taken up environmentalism and is trying her best to get everyone she knows on board. Today, she and I are with other members ofKlean Street, a charity she’s a member of and that she’s forced me to volunteer with. She has tried to get Laura to join, but Laura would sooner jump off a cliff than be caught in an orange reflective vest picking garbage off the side of the road. Which, evidently, is what we’re doing today!
I actually don’t quite mind it. It’s kind of mindless busywork that allows me to ponder my life. These days, the only thing I ponder is a certain beautiful, sexy man in my life.
“What’s up with you?” Jamie asks.
“What?” I look up.
“You’ve been grinning ever since you got here. It’s a little unnerving.”
“What? Me being happy is unnerving?”
“Yeah. It’s not that I want you to be unhappy, it’s just that you are rarely ever happy, and when you are it never manifests on your face. So I kind of feel like maybe your body has been snatched by a perpetually happy ghost.”
I laugh. “Relax, my body hasn’t been hijacked.”
Jamie smiles. “Then what’s going on?”
“Nothing. Can’t I just be in a good mood?”
“No, you can’t. What happened?” She waits for me to answer, but when I offer nothing, she continues, “Did you meet a man?”
“No...”
She gasps. “You fucking liar. Yes, you did. I can tell.” She gasps again. This time both her hands go to her mouth and she drops the pointy stick she’s been using to gather trash off the road.
“Can you stop doing that? You’re drawing attention.”
“I don’t give a damn about any of that. You met someone! I’m not sure, but I think this is a sign of the end times.”
I roll my eyes and continue spearing trash and dropping it in my trash bag. “How is it that you’re so dramatic and our friendship has lasted this long? I would’ve thought I’d have gotten tired of you by now.”
“Oh, hush. Tell me about this man.”
“I didn’t say I met a man.”
“You don’t have to say it. I can tell these things. So spill.”
“I am not lying. I haven’t met any new men recently.”
She raises an eyebrow. “Are you trying to play semantics with me?” I don’t answer. “Yes, you are. So it’s not a new man, but a man you already know.” She strokes her chin melodramatically. “Hmmm, who could it be?”
“You know this trash isn’t going to pick itself up…” I say.
Suddenly, she gasps again and this time it takes me by surprise. My hand goes to my chest. “Oh my God, you have got to stop doing that.”
“REID HARRIS?!” Her eyes are literally bugging out.
I’m afraid to deny it because Jamie knows me so well she’d be able to tell I was lying in a heartbeat.
“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. You and Reid Harris? I’m so happy I think I could explode.”
“I’m only telling you this because you guessed it. Not because I want to, but yes, it’s Reid.”
“Awww, you just called him Reid.”
“That is his name.”
“You know what I mean.” She’s staring at me as if I’ve grown a second head. “This is amazing. I can’t believe you and Reid Harris have something going on.”
