Chapter Fifteen

Blithe

“Do one of you want to tell me what’s going on?” Duke was the first to speak after Starry had shut and locked the door to the witch room behind us.

“An alarm spell gone wrong,” Cord sighed. “It was meant to let Starry know if anyone’s magic was messing with mine. We weren’t sure whether or not Mundanes Before Magic were working with any magic users or not. I know it sounds paranoid.”

“No, it doesn’t,” I shook my head and took Cord’s hand in mine. “They wouldn’t need to be a magic user to use some enchanted objects.”

“Exactly,” Starry nodded. “And it was about more than just magic touching on him. It links us together and let’s me know straight away that someone is tracking or chasing him. It went off a few times when he got into fights with those means squirrels who live out in the woods.”

“They’re assholes,” Cord said, flashing me a sheepish smile.

“So, it would work even if it was GPS or something?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Starry nodded. “It worked rather better than either of us thought it would. It also alerts in the reverse. We didn’t grow up together like I did with Leo and Liam. So, we forged our own bond when we decided that we had to stick together to end the war. I think when he ran from you it all went haywire. My dragon’s been screaming about weird shit all day. Once he said you were burning Cord’s boxes and that you were trying to lock him away so we couldn’t feel him. He even thought Ginger might have something to do with it since her name kept coming up over and over.”

“Then why did you keep saying she was dead?” Cord asked Starry.

“Because it’s true. I was telling him and you and everyone else. I brought Marcus, because everything coming over our forged spell link was erratic. I just didn’t realize it was the forged link and not the group link. We’re all so close-knit here that sometimes it all tangles up like a ball of yarn when you’re finished with it.”

“Meeting your true-mate makes you crazy,” I said. “I’ve seen it before.”

“Exactly. Only, we had an extra link in play here,” Starry frowned. “I’m sorry for that. I’m sorry I forgot. It’s never been quite like this before. It’s supposed to alert me by heating up my dragon, but this was different.”

“He can touch my magic,” Cord whispered. “That’s what was so freaky about everything at the meeting hall. Blithe’s magic touched me before I even smelled him.”

“Sorry about that,” I said.

It was my turn to smile sheepishly. That was the sort of magic my parents frowned on. It was fast and solid even when you couldn’t see it. Whatever mixed between my parents’ genetics made me something extra that I didn’t even understand yet. The closest I’d seen to it was the magic some of the elves I was related to because my cousin Sky married an elf did. Yet, I wasn’t an elf or a dragon.

“Don’t worry about it,” Cord grinned up at me. “Starry got a harpy. I got a vampyric wizard or something.”

“I don’t think he’s a wizard. Do vampires have wand lore?” Starry laughed.

“Our dads’ family was from Scotland,” Duke offered up.

“They had druids not wizards,” I corrected him.

“Interesting,” Starry bit his lip. “That’s definitely something for us to talk about another time.”

“Why did you ask if I were fireproof?” Duke asked.

“You’re going to stand in front of them in case my fire gets to be too much,” Starry said.

“During what?” I asked.

“All these questions,” Starry said and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“What spell did you do?” I asked another question despite the omega dragon’s frustration.

“It bound us. We made our own red strings of fate so to speak. Mine is bound to my dragon’s fire. That is too hot for scaleless people to handle,” Starry said.

“Hey, wait a minute,” Duke said, sitting down on the edge of the sofa and rubbing his heel against his forehead for a second.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

“Yeah. I’m thinking. Just everyone hold on a second.”
