“Woah!” Duke called out in the kitchen before breaking out into laughter.
Once Cord’s footsteps were far enough away, I gave chase.
Chapter Twenty-Six
Cord
“He’s coming!”My cat hissed into my thoughts, sinking down into the role of the pursued.“Faster hairless one! Faster!”
I paused in the living room wondering which direction I should take off in while still remaining inside the house. I wanted him to catch me in the bedroom, not here in the living room where we’d without a doubt give Duke an unsolicited show. And I certainly didn’t want him to catch me outside. That would’ve defeated the purpose of my head start.
“RUN!”My cat hissed and I circled around the sofa as Blithe came into the living room.
His eyes were wolfy and the growl he let out deep with need. The hair on the back of my neck rose and a chill shimmied down my spine. I wanted to be captured by my mate but not just yet. So, when he rounded the sofa to snatch me up, I cheated. I shrank into a shift and shimmied under the sofa, shifting back as to my human self as I came out the other side.
Blithe blocked my way to the hall. So, I had to sprint into the kitchen where Duke still was not to be caught. I ran around the table with Blithe on my heels. If Duke minded our antics, he didn’t say anything to us. He spoke rapid French into his phone and hopped up on the counter to be out of the way.
“Everything alright, cousin?” Blithe asked, as we feinted this way and that, both trying to trick each other about the direction we planned to take.
“Fine,” he said in English and ended the call in French. “I called him.”
“Him who?” I asked, as I considered cheating again or at least ducking under the table in my human form.
“My bio dad,” Duke said. “He’s going to cover the moving company for us and send me some maps from before everything was developed here.”
“Interesting,” I said.
“Theories?” Blithe asked, ducking under the table and coming up on my side of it.
I barely scrambled away before he wrapped his arms around my legs.
“Maybe. It’s probably nothing. Just some theories. I’ll let you know if anything comes of it. Thought it was better to ask him than to ask our carriers,” Duke said as Blithe lunged for me again. “But I think you have other things to occupy your time with.”
“I do,” he said, but snatched empty air, because I was already back in the living room.
“Vampires may be fast, but you’ll have to pay attention to catch me!” I called out, drawing his gaze back to me.
In a blur, my mate was behind me. I blinked and ducked low as I scampered for the hallway.
“Let him catch you before Duke draws him into some historical conversation!”My cat screeched in my thoughts, the sound almost the call of a horny alley cat.
He was right. I sprinted toward the bedroom, glancing over my shoulder to ensure Blithe was still following me. I grabbed the doorknob, right as he grabbed me up off my feet. I kicked and squirmed in mock outrage until he twisted me around and pressed my back up against the door. The outrage was fake, but his torso leaning against me was real and held me in place.
My heart pounded in my ears and I wondered for a second how loud it was to Blithe’s vampyric ears – but just for a second. Then his lips were on mine and his ears were the last thing on my mind. It’d only been days since I met him – very eventful days – but days nonetheless. Mere days – mere magical days. Mythoughts swirled around my brain in time with Blithe’s warm, moist tongue lashing around my mouth.
So much had happened and so much was left to happen.
“Stop it!”My cat purred into my thoughts.“Stop chasing the yarn-tail of your thoughts and kiss the wolf.”
I kissed Blithe harder as if I could move my tongue fast enough to chase away the worries my inner beast referred to.
“You know we have to go through the door to be inside the bedroom, right? We won’t sink through the door,” I teased Blithe between kisses.
“That’s the next spell I’ll work out,” he said and kissed me again, sucking my bottom lip between his teeth.
A wave of tingly pleasure shimmied down my spine landing square between my legs. I rested one hand on the back of my mate’s neck and fumbled for the doorknob with the other.
“Coming down the hall to my room!” Duke bellowed and we broke apart laughing before I could find the doorknob.
