“I know, but it’s weird. Like the makings of a woman walked through here and it fucked up the vibe.”
I roll my eyes. “Oh my God, Zane…are you fucking serious? Are you telling me that you’ve never had a woman at the?—”
“No,” he expels, sounding disgusted by the thought. “There’s no way in hell I would have some rando chick at my house.”
“There has to have been someone who wasn’t just a one-night stand in your life.”
“There was. But she was…well, let’s just say Adrian wouldn’t have liked that.”
I narrow my eyes because not only am I curious, but not surprised. “I remember you never listening to Adrian when we were children.”
“And I don’t,” his little brother returns. “However, this one time he may have killed her for real, for real. I was literally sleeping with the enemy.”
My eyes widen a bit and fuck being curious. I’m intrigued as all hell. “Tell me,” I beseech, stopping what I’m doing as I lean over the table and closer to the phone. “How long did it last?”
“About two months. And that’s all I’m saying.”
“Oh, c’mon,” I whine through a smile. “I know everything about you.”
“Youkneweverything about me once upon a time. However, a lot has happened since I moved off Hampton Ave.”
“Then it sounds like you need to catch me up.”
“Elena, my brother willkillme if he found how where my dick has been. Let’s just say we were atwarwith these motherfuckers and I was fucking the don’s daughter.”
“Sounds scandalous.” Zane scoffs but chuckles a bit and I can see him now just shaking his head. “You know it’s somethingyou’ve been dying to tell someone. Who else can you trust but me?”
“Can I?” he asks solemnly. “Trust you?”
“Yes,” I state immediately. “I’d never betray you. I owe you everything for helping me get Marcella.”
“You’ve already thanked me enough. Plus, Adrian did most of the work. He is the one who wanted to handle The Disciples himself. Has been for a long time.”
“Well, I appreciate you all the same.”
“All right…” Zane singsongs through a sigh. “On your honor, Elena, no funny business.”
“No funny business,” I repeat. “And on my honor.”
“Okay, good.” I hear him inhale, and I lean closer to the phone to imagine everything he’s about to tell me. “Her name was Sophia. Beautiful brown eyes, fucking tits for days…she was everything sweet and savory, and I couldn’t help but fuckin’ become obsessed with this girl.”
My heart flutters in my chest because I’ve never heard Zane speak of someone like that before, even though it’s been a long time since we’ve spoken about deep and crazy things. “How did you meet her?”
“Party,” he replies. “She had brothers, big ones. You know that I’ve always lived on the dangerous side of caution and I just wanted to get closer, speak with her for a second. It was the craziest thirty seconds of my life.”
“Why?”
“One of her brothers found me and I kissed her before sprinting away like a fuckin’ pussy. I didn’t see her again until six weeks later.”
“Another party?”
“No, believe it or not, a horse race. A lot of mob shit happens there and I just so happened to be there, too.”
“Did you get to speak to her there, too?”
“Yeah…she sought me out that time.”
I bob my head pridefully. “That kiss must’ve really knocked her out of the park.”
