“Astonishing,” he whispered, his voice softer than a kiss.

Then I was moving again, growing more and more aware of every gentle touch, every little press of his fingers, every caress of his magic as it looked for a way in. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, be conscious about it, not until his hand slid to theback of my neck and he pulled me down. I fell against his chest, raising my head to protest when he pressed his mouth to mine. Running his tongue over my lips, he waited for me to open them, then devoured my mouth just as thoroughly as he had the rest of me.

When we drew away for breath, his fingers dug into my hips, nudging me to move.

“Stop thinking about it, my lovely rose,” he whispered, his low voice and sultry look making me wonder if he was the same man that I watched trip over his feet when he got drunk just a few days ago. “Unless you prefer my mouth again?”

While the thought was tempting, I needed something more. I propped my hands by his head and rolled my hips, making us both moan as his length slid in and out. The angle was perfect, his cock reaching that sweet spot inside of me while my clit rubbed against his warm skin with every slide.

His movement became less controlled too, hands gripping more than tracing. By the time I reached my second orgasm, he was breathing heavily, hips rocking to meet mine and his fingers squeezing me so tightly that it was almost painful.

Right before I climaxed, I felt his hand move to the small of my back—a reassuring presence that didn’t make me jerk away this time. His energy slammed against me, not a spark but a steady flow, pushing me over the edge with such force that it wasn’t stars I saw but blackness. When I came back to it, I was lying on his chest, with his fingers running lines across my spine.

He looked at me the moment I opened my eyes, the smile on his face soothing my worry somewhat. Pushing a strand of hair out of my face, he set me on the bed beside him.

“You did so well,” he whispered, brushing his lips over my forehead. It was such a simple gesture, yet it made me melt—or maybe that was the exhaustion that rushed into my body, calling for a long overdue rest. “Can you feel it?”

His hand stopped on my lower back where he lay it flat, right over the warmth that lingered even when the rest of my body had grown cool.

“Is that…?”

“Mhm.” He nodded, reaching for the covers. Throwing them over us, he returned to staring at me, that strange smile never leaving his face. “You are a remarkable person, Celeste. I hope you know that. What you just did is not as easy as it mightseem. Not just because facing your fears is terrifying. Controlling your internal flow and energy is not something a normal human should be able to do.”

“I might be many things, but normal I’m not,” I said, suppressing a yawn.

Malakai chuckled, tugging the covers to my chin.

“Sleep, Celeste,” he whispered, and my eyelids fluttered as if forced down by his magic. “We have a lot more work to do. You’ll need your strength.”

Chapter 25

Celeste

“If you are going to stalk me, you might as well talk to me.” I crossed my arms, leaning further back into the tree. When I received no answer, I looked over my shoulder just as Myra stepped from the other side of the trunk, giving me a small smile.

“I’m not stalking you,” she said innocently, leaning her shoulder against the bark. She was wearing tight pants and a loose tunic, not her armor, but they still looked easy to move in or fight, unlike my billowing skirts. The wind played with her short, dark green hair, making it hitch on her pointed ears.

“You’ve been following me around since I left the palace,” I grumbled, nodding to the ground beside me. She hesitated, but then she sat down. My eyes lingered on her covered back, wondering if the place where they cut her wings still hurt. I didn’t dare to ask.

“I’m watching over you,” she said quietly, finally looking back at me. “If I was stalking you, you would have never known I was doing it.”

I huffed a laugh, adjusting myself on the hard earth. We were still within the grounds of Malakai’s palace, although this part of the gardens seemed less frequently used by his court—or they were avoiding it because of my presence, which was more likely. There had been a shift in their demeanor lately, a bit more care in their wordsand actions, and I had a nagging suspicion that Malakai must have made some kind of proclamation. He had been glued to my side almost every moment I was awake—and when he had to go somewhere, Myra would appear, claiming that she was either bored or had nothing better to do than keep me company.

“At least tell me he’s not making you stand guard in front of my door all night,” I sighed. He had offered me to share his bedroom after the night we spent together, but there was no way in hell I was doing that. Especially while my body still remembered what he had done to it. Never in my life had I thought having slow, gentle sex could feel this good. Still, his giant cock and that magic he kept zapping into me sure made things interesting. And his mouth, damn that man could really use his mouth.

Desire coiled in my belly, stirring up my magic and making me groan in pain.

Right, pure thoughts. Pure thoughts.

It hadn’t been that long since I calmed the damn thing down.

“He is not making me do anything,” Myra replied with a shrug.

“Maybe we should all start sleeping together. At least this way we could all get some rest. Or not.” I smirked when I noticed her face turning a darker shade of blue. Considering the things I had seen Fae do in that palace, I was surprised she had even a shred of modesty left in her.

I chuckled, my smile widening as the wind blew in our direction, ruffling my hair. I felt so…light, so content, so unburdened. I knew it was the place that was influencing those thoughts, but like many foolish humans who had ventured in here, I didn’t want to leave. Here, there were no hunters and witches after my head, no vampire trying to love me more than I deserved, no wolf desperate for my affection. No pain, no troubles, no prob…

“We have a problem,” Myra muttered, and I opened my eyes.
