Page 8 of Only a Kiss

The corners of his lips quirked up into the semblance of a smile even as his eyes warned me I was teetering on the edge of impropriety. If he only knew how desperate I was to go tumbling over it.

“What do you want to know?”

I answered him honestly, unable to hide how breathy my voice was at being so close to the object of all my desires.“Everything.”

He shook his head, but he smiled like he was flattered, and I loved how the corners of his eyes crinkled and his face lit up when he smiled fully.“You’re trying to stroke my ego.”

My heart fluttered. His ego wasn’t the thing I was aching to stroke.

As if reading my mind, his smile slowly withered until he had that heated look in his eyes again. But it was wiped away just as quickly when our food arrived.

Despite his attempts to keep the conversation innocent, we kept veering into dangerous waters as our conversation naturally shifted from topic to topic throughout dinner.

I’d never spent so much uninterrupted time with him, and it was thrilling to be the center of his attention and learn more about him.He was incredibly smart and insightful, and his intelligence was just as much of a turn-on as his toned physique that he couldn’t completely hide underneath his suit.By the time the check arrived, we’d gone through two bottles of wine, and my body was thrumming with need for him—my thighs slick and my panties soaked from my desire.

He watched my mouth while I talked as much as he gazed into my eyes, and the heat that flashed every time he stared at my mouth made me want to be reckless.

Bold.

I wasn’t naive.I knew this couldn’t really go anywhere. He was Jenna’s dad and she would probably hate me if she knew how desperately I wanted him.I couldn’t risk my friendship with her, but I also couldn’t deny how badly I wanted to push Travis and see how far I could go with this.

Maybe it was the wine talking, or maybe my hormones were finally getting the best of me.Either way, when he suggested we share an Uber, I didn’t object. When he slid in beside me and his thigh rubbed against mine, I didn’t move away or even attempt to hide the stuttered breath that escaped at the contact. When the driver pulled up outside my apartment, instead of letting Travis go home like I knew I should, I asked him if he’d walk me up to my door.I lived in a fairly safe neighborhood, but it was still LA.

He stared at me for a long time—until the driver cleared his throat—before his jaw clenched, he nodded once, and then slid out of the car to follow me.As the car pulled away from the curb, we stood only a couple of feet apart, staring at each other as desire thickened the air between us.

I couldn’t stop this.

I didn’t want to.

I stepped back and he followed as if a string attached him to me—God, how I wished that were true—and he couldn’t let me get too far away from him.I spun around and walked up the stairs to my building, and listened as his heavy footsteps followed me up to my apartment until we reached my door.I unlocked it and opened it wide enough to see inside—an invitation—before finally looking back at him.He stood there staring at me, his expression hungry but cautious.

“Thank you for walking me up.”

“Sure,” he said, his voice deep and ragged and calling to something inside of me that ached for him worse than it ever had.

He took a step closer, although it seemed almost like an unconscious choice. His jaw clenched and his gaze darted around my face like he was looking at me—really looking at me—for the first time.

“Do you need anything else?”he asked.

Only a kiss.

Except truthfully, I knew a kiss would never be enough.I’d had his cum in my mouth and that wasn’t even enough.I wantedhim. All of him.

“Do you want to come inside?”I asked.

He swallowed thickly, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat before his attention was pulled to something behind me, and I watched with a heady mix of fascination and fear as recognition lit up his eyes.I didn’t have to turn around to know what had grabbed his attention, what made him freeze up.

The mask I wore to the masquerade happened to be hanging from my coat rack beside the door.

His attention moved back to me, slowly, but when it finally landed on me it was weighted down by truths neither of us had said out loud. The longer he looked, the more my nipples pebbled sharply against my dress and my core clenched in anticipation.

His gaze darted down to my chest, to the evidence of what his attention was doing to me, and his eyes sharpened with need.He licked his bottom lip before he stepped forward, until his body was only a breath away from mine.

“Sadie,”—his voice was rough and sent shivers down my spine—“were you at the masquerade ball two nights ago?”

I looked into his gorgeous hazel eyes, allowing him to see the truth clearly.“You already know the answer.”There was no way to help how breathy my voice came out.It was hard to take a full breath when all I wanted was to feel his lips on mine again.

He groaned and then leaned forward, his hands shooting out to grip the doorframe on either side of me.“Are you…” His jaw clenched again like he was afraid to ask what he wanted to know.“Was it you?”he choked out.
