He doesn’t give me a chance to answer before leaning over and giving me a hard kiss on the mouth. “Better.”
“Easy for you to say. You don’t have thirty nine-year-olds who won’t hesitate to ask you questions about your boyfriend all afternoon.”
I’m whining but it’s all for show. I’ll stand in front of my class and answer questions aboutmy boyfrienduntil the end of time as long as I can go home to Cash at the end of each day.
The end of each day. I frown. He won’t be here every day. As soon as his album is finished, he’ll leave Winter Falls.
“What’s wrong?”
I force a smile. “Nothing. A bit hungry and ready for lunch is all.”
“Lucky for you, I have the perfect remedy.” He sets a bag down on my desk.
I sniff. “Did you bring me lunch?”
“How does a hamburger, fries, and a shake sound?”
“Like I’m going to gain fifty pounds.” My words don’t stop me from digging into the bag and pulling out the food.
“How did you get the diner to give you take-out food?” I ask around a bite of my burger.
Take-out food isn’t normally done in Winter Falls since the packaging is bad for the environment and everything bad for the environment is banned in town. It’s weird, but I’ll get used to it. Eventually.
He settles on the desk before opening his own burger. “As it happens, the diner is owned by my sister-in-law, Moon. I’m her favorite brother-in-law.”
I snort. “What did you promise her?”
“Signed t-shirts from all the band members. She’s going to display them on the walls of the diner.”
“Aren’t you worried your fans will find out and chase you down?”
“Not really. Our PA, Aurora, monitors social media to check where the fans think we’re hiding.”
“They think you’re hiding?”
He sighs. “If we’re not seen out partying every night, we’re hiding. If we are out every night, we’re out of control.”
“Sounds annoying.”
“It is what it is. Aurora posts pictures of us in different places to keep the fans guessing where we are.”
“Do you worry they’ll find you?”
“Nah. The fans are the reason we can do what we love.” He presses his thigh against mine. “But I’m not here to discuss my fans. How is your first day going?”
I can’t help the smile from spreading across my face. “Good. Tiring but good.”
“I bet you’re an awesome teacher. All the boys probably have crushes on you.”
I roll my eyes. “They’re nine. They don’t have crushes.”
“You’d be surprised. When I was nine…”
I hold up a hand. “I do not want to know about your crush on Mrs. What’s Her Name.”
“No? Mrs. What’s Her Name is now Ms. What’s Her Name and showed up at one of my concerts.”
My mouth drops open. “You’re kidding.”
