“No, you can’t,” I repeat.
“But we can’t share all the women,” Gibson says.
“Wow.” My eyes widen. “I don’t even know where to begin with the two of you.”
“Don’t worry, darling. I know where to begin.” Gibson winks.
Cash smacks him upside the head. “Knock it off before I shove you off of this porch.”
“Nobody better harm my rose bushes,” a woman shouts from inside the house.
Virginia sighs. “Your rose bushes are safe, Gratitude.”
“Are you going to stand on my porch all day? I thought you were moving out today.”
“I am moving out. I’ll be out of your hair soon.”
“Is that Gratitude the librarian? You live with your boss?” Dylan asks.
She glares at him. “I’m moving out. Or did you forget why you’re here? Did syphilis rot your brain?”
“Syphilis? Does syphilis still exist?”
“As much fun as this is,” I interrupt. “Let’s get you moved.”
Virginia motions to the boxes stacked in the hallway. “This is my stuff.”
“What about your furniture?”
“I didn’t bring any when I moved here. The apartment’s furnished anyway.”
It doesn’t take long before the boxes are stacked in the truck.
“One more thing,” Virginia calls before rushing into the house. She returns with a cage.
Gibson points at the small creature inside the cage. “What the hell is that thing?”
“Let me see.” Jett sticks his finger in the cage. “Hey there, what’s your name?” He yelps. “It bit me!”
Virginia rolls her eyes. “Didn’t anyone ever teach you to not stick your finger where it doesn’t belong?”
Jett waggles his eyebrows. “I’ve never had any complaints before.”
Her cheeks flush. “Um… ah…,” she stammers.
Dylan pushes him. “Don’t embarrass, Virginia, asshole.”
“I don’t need you to protect me,” she mumbles.
“Come on, Virginia.” I herd her toward the truck. “We’ll ride to the apartment. The rest of these jerks can walk.”
“I’m not a jerk,” Dylan proclaims.
“Just an idiot with severe memory loss,” Virginia whispers so only I can hear her.
I bite my tongue to stop my laugh from spilling out. I’m not in any hurry for Dylan to figure out who Virginia is. I’m having entirely too much fun watching him spin his wheels.
“Are you excited about having your own place?” I ask once we’re driving toward her apartment.
