“Attack?”
“Rush me to ask me questions. Why was your mom here? What happened with Cash? Am I heartbroken?”
Of course, I’m heartbroken. The man I love dumped me because my mom is a bitch. How could I not be?
Tears well in my eyes but I sniff to stop them from falling down my face. I want to scream and shout. I want to cry my eyes out. But I inhale a deep breath and keep it all inside. Virginia would run straight into the arms of the gossip gals if let the heartbreak beast lose in this house.
“No wonder you asked me to bring you groceries.”
“Exactly.” I nod. “I wasn’t facing the gossip gal firing squad again.”
She shivers. “Those women scare me. The last time they came into the library, they got mad because they couldn’t find some book they wanted and confronted Gratitude. They ended up in a screaming match with them yelling at her for being a prude because she didn’t source books about BDSM.”
She ducks her head but not before I notice her cheeks heat.
“I wish I had been there.”
“I wish I hadn’t.”
I dig into the first bag and start emptying it. “Anyway, I didn’t want to face them again, but I needed supplies.” Heartbreak calls for chocolate, potato chips, and alcohol.
Virginia grasps my wrist to stop me. “I’m sorry about Cash. Can I ask what happened or will you kick me out?”
I would never kick Virginia out. She’s my only friend in Winter Falls. I thought Cash and the band were my friends but Cash showed me his true colors today.
“He dumped me.”
“Dumped you? That man loves you more than life. When he looks at you, he has cartoon hearts in his eyes.”
“And yet….” I guess Cash had her fooled too. At least I’m not alone in believing Cash’s lies.
“I’m sorry. What a dick.” Her eyes widen at her choice of word.
My lips nearly turn up at how outraged she appears at her own behavior but not even Virginia’s adorable shy behavior can bring a smile to my face today. “A total dick.”
“Did he give you a reason?”
“He’s not ‘good enough for me’. Bull cocky,” I snarl. “He wants to remain unattached so he can sleep with all his groupies when he goes back on tour. I was a fun distraction but now it’s over.”
“Do you honestly believe he broke up with you to sleep with other women?”
What other reason is there? None of what happened makes sense to me. Except for my mom being a witch. Her behavior was completely normal. As was her impromptu visit. Classic Mom move.
But I’m done with Mom's moves. No matter what my relationship status with Cash is, I’m done trying to earn her love. It’s about time she starts trying to earn mine. And my love will not be easy to earn.
“Are we going for ‘I hate him and want revenge’ or ‘I will love him forever and want to drown my sorrows in chocolate’?”
I stare at her. Where’s the shy librarian Virginia I know and love?
“What? I can do revenge.”
Bless her heart. She’s offering me a distraction. I’ll take it.
“This I gotta hear. Tell me more.”
“We can print out a picture of his face and throw darts at it.”
“Good idea but I don’t have any darts and if I remember junior year of high school correctly neither one of us is talented at throwing things.”
