Oran peered down at the dripping liquid, seemingly unbothered. “It’s no problem, sweetheart.” He took a napkin from the server and said the next part under his breath. “You can lick it off me later.”
I’d been closest, and after a quick glance around, I was certain I’d been the only one to hear him. I also noticed that Rowan had gone as white as a sheet. I had no idea what had happened, but I knew something was up.
“I’m so glad you two could make it, and congratulations again.” I placed a hand on Lina’s arm to convey my sincerity, then turned to my friend. “Ro, can you help me with my dress? I need to run to the restroom.”
She nodded distractedly. I took her hand and led her away, anxious to know what had upset her.
“What on earth is wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Not a ghost.” She shook her head. “I know that woman. I’ve been keeping tabs on my ex-boyfriend’s father, Lawrence Wellington. He’s a horrible, terrifying person. That’s the woman he’s been dating for months. The first woman in years he’s dated with any sort of regularity.”
And now, Oran was engaged to her?
Why would such a beautiful young woman date someone like Wellington? Rowan swore he was an awful human being. And why would Oran want a woman like that? Though, it sounded like he wanted to punish her more than marry her.
What in the holy heck was going on?
I had no clue, but it sounded like trouble.
