“A year this June,” he said quickly, saving me, and I just nodded.

“I can’t believe he’s kept you a secret this long.”

“Probably because she’s his brother’s ex,” Toby said, the edge of a slur in his voice, as he walked over with Rachel. She washanging onto him tightly, trying to pull him back. She wouldn’t even look at me.

“Hey man, you let her go,” Adam said easily, seemingly prepared for the conversation, but I wasn’t. I swallowed down my champagne and sipped more to keep my mouth full.

“You can have my sloppy seconds,” Toby snarled, and Rachel snickered as if she found that hilarious.

“I’m more of a man than you’ll ever be. At least that’s what Katie tells me. Every night,” Adam shot back. I felt my face flush, but smirked nevertheless, holding onto him tightly.

It was such an uncomfortable situation. Adam finally looked down at me, as if sensing that I wasn’t at ease speaking to Toby and Rachel. Rachel hadn’t said a word, but I knew that she was fuming. I could see it all over her face.

“Excuse us, my girl looks tired. We need to get settled in our room,” Adam said, smoothly taking my elbow and ushering me away from Toby. When I looked back, it was like a storm cloud had descended over Toby’s face, and I could see Rachel about to pop.

“That was wonderful,” I hissed to Adam, and he laughed out loud.

“Wasn’t it, though?”

“God, this place is nice,” I marveled, looking around. “How did Toby afford such a lavish place for a wedding?”

Adam scoffed. “Toby isn’t paying for it. Toby doesn’t pay for anything. I’m taking care of it.”

My heart sped up. I remembered Toby telling me that Adam had stolen his inheritance money, and despite what Toby had done, I didn’t think that was right.

“Well, that money is rightfully Toby’s...” I started, and I felt Adam immediately tense up as we approached the door of the room he’d booked for us. I hoped to God he’d booked us tworooms, especially after the awkward conversation I had just found myself in.

Adam’s face changed, similar to what I had just seen with Toby’s expression, as if a storm cloud descended on it, and I was struck again by how much they looked alike, though Adam was more handsome.

“Is that what you think of me?” he said in an eerily calm voice, and I swallowed hard.

“I don’t think much of you at all,” I snapped, my blood heating up with anger, and Adam set his jaw, nodding tightly.

“I guess you don’t. But that will change, before the weekend is over.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Will it?”

“Yes,” he said, getting closer to me, so close that I thought he might lean down and kiss me.

I didn’t want him to kiss me but then I didwant him to kiss me, despite how mad I was at him. What was wrong with me?

I couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss he planted on me when I first arrived, how intense it was, how wonderfully hot, but Adam just moved past me to unlock the door with the keycard, stalking into the room.

I followed him inside, noting that there were two bedrooms connected by a suite with a living area, wet bar, and large television. Adam gently pushed on my lower back, guiding me to one of the bedrooms.

“By the end of this weekend, you’ll see I’m the better brother,” he said in that same low, dangerous voice, and I shivered at the sound of it.

“Goodnight,” I said tersely, but Adam’s hand was still warm on my lower back, and his blue eyes had fire in them. I didn’t know if it meant he was angry or full of lust.

He couldn’t possibly think I was going to sleep with him. Not after that fight we’d just had. Not after I’d all but told him Ithought he was trash. But then again, Adam seemed like a man that didn’t get turned down too often. My body was battling with my brain which made me even more sure I needed to tell him in no uncertain terms.

“I’m not going to sleep with you,” I said firmly.

“We’ll see about that,” he replied, and I stared at him for a long moment, heat coursing down my spine. I bit my lip just slightly as I turned away, and walked into my room, closing the door.
