“It makes me feel young again. Like dating in my twenties but with a better wardrobe and my own money.”
I fall back into my chair, my crossed leg tapping in happiness under my desk.
“Is this how you have felt the last couple of months?”
Taylor chuckles and lowers her voice.
“Oh, absolutely. It’s been quite the ride, Chloe. I’ve had a lot of fun lately, and I have to say, it’s liberating. If anything about this situation with the recent corruption has taught me, it is that our carefully constructed lives built on reputation and expectations can change on a dime. Sometimes, you have to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the moment.”
Of course, she understands. It’s why we have been best friends for so long. She gets me, and I can’t help but feel a more profound closeness with her. Who knew we’d both embark on unexpected journeys of self-discovery in the arms of much younger men?
“I guess lifecan bemore than a carefully planned, scheduled career and meticulously organized wardrobe.”
She chuckles while gripping the arms on the chair when rising.
“It sure can, and if you get stuck navigating your new cougar world, you can always talk to an expert like me. With two months of experience under my belt, I know it all. Not!”
She winks and takes a few steps to the door, resting her hand on the glass handle.
“But seriously, you gave me some incredible advice about giving Paolo a chance, and look how amazing that’s turned out. You need to follow your own advice now.”
I nod, fully aware of the truth in her words.
“You’re absolutely right, Taylor. I’ll—” I start to reply before my office phone jolts to life with a shrill ring. “I’ve got to take this call, but I’ll keep you posted on how things unfold.”
With a wave, Taylor quietly slips out of my office, leaving me feeling grateful for having her. As she heads back to her office, Paolo intercedes, and they head down the hall while I take the incoming call about the upcoming ad campaign. While on the call, my phone buzzes with a text. I glance at the screen and see a message from Sebastian.
Lunch today
I can swing by your office and pick you up
A smile tugs at my lips as I quickly reply while listening to the public relations firm confirm the press release dates.
No can do. I’m swamped but thank you.
I’d love to escape to lunch with him, but it’s chaos today. I warned him about this when he dropped me off, but he must have forgotten.
I thought I told you dinner.
You did
I don’t want to wait
I set my phone down, focusing on my work call and checking my calendar to ensure the dates match what I have. He remains undeterred when another text comes through.
What’s your favorite meal in the whole world
Sushi
Italian
When I look at my screen, it’s such an odd question that I can’t help but reply.
Thai. Why?
Thai hurts my tummy
Good to know. Now I must get back to work. Text ya later about dinner.
