“I see you’ve already made your statement to the police officers regarding what happened, so I’m not going to ask you to repeat it. What I am going to ask is, where were you last night.”
She looks at the bed. “I’ve been in bed. I got some wounds after the fire. However, the doctor said I can go home soon,” she informs me.
The woman looks mousy. She almost looks like an innocent doll with rosy cheeks and puckered lips. She’s the opposite ofwhat I would think the mafia prince would be dating. Maybe he’s with her to help ease the pressure off him because of who his dad is.
“I see. Have you been able to move around on your own?”
She looks between the two men who are taking in the situation. Stavros holds on to her waist a little tighter against him. “Is this the best time to be having this conversation? She’s in the hospital.”
“True. In a normal situation, I would agree with you. However, Audrina is alive while her husband is dead. That’s a problem. Where were you last night?”
“I was in bed.”
“Would you like to talk without the guys here?” I ask her.
She shakes her head. “Andreas is my brother,” she pointed at a handsome man off to the side and then looked at Stavros. “Um, this is my-”
“I’m Stavros Bilias. I’m going to assume you know who I am judging by the look on your face and the direction of this conversation,” he states.
The rumors are true. Many women we have spoken to regarding Stavros have told us how sexy his voice is. I’m not terribly surprised.
“I just want to remind you that lying to a police officer is a crime,” I retort to Audrina.
Her eyes start to well up as she looks from me to her brother. “I didn’t do anything. He put me in the hospital, and I was going to let all of the money go. I didn’t care about the money. I didn’t care about it but wanted him out of my life.”
“Audrina! Stop!” Andreas barks.
I smile at them all and close my notebook. “I will be in contact. Don’t leave town.”
Chapter Twenty-Four
Stavros
It has been a week since Audrina has moved into my place. She has been enjoying the amenities of my penthouse a lot more than she cares to admit.
Andreas, Audrina, and I had a long conversation about what working would look like for her. We agreed she should work, but not until after the investigation.
It is very seldom that she will show sadness for Derek or display being unhappy about the situation she is in. I know she likes being independent, and I haven’t pushed what being with me means to her. Little does she know what this life could mean for her.
I also haven’t been making any moves toward her. She just got out of the hospital a week ago after almost dying, and her soon-to-be ex-husband was found dead. Now, there’s an investigation regarding his death. The woman has been through enough to have me dry-humping her leg like a horny dog.
Shelly has been around the kitchen for the past few hours, making something for us to eat. She’s shooed me out of the kitchen and almost made me fire her for being such a controlling woman.
“Dinner will be ready in about thirty minutes. How about you get changed for dinner?” Shelly instructs both of us.
I’m seated in my leather chair beside the fireplace while Audrina is reading on the couch. We have developed a boring routine since she moved in, and I’m not going to lie; it is lovely.
Audrina’s been wearing shorter and sexier clothing now that she’s getting comfortable in her new home. The woman’s scent is everywhere in my penthouse. I smelled her intoxicating scent when I entered my home, making me want her more.
She’s playing with me.
“Changed for dinner?” Audrina’s little voice asks from on the couch.
“Yes. Something not too formal but nicer than the garb you have on now,” Shelly states with disdain in her voice.
Audrina mumbled as she walked over to her room off to the side of the penthouse. My room occupies half of the penthouse, leaving the other side to be the main living spaces. Audrina’s room is next to the kitchen and living room with her ensuite.
I put her over there until I knew she was healed. I might be an asshole, but I’m not that big of an asshole. I don’t need to force a woman to have sex with me.
