Page 34 of The Wrong Guy

Derek won. He is getting everything he wanted, and now I’m officially done. It is not worth him trying to kill me to get what he wants. It is not worth my life for him to keep his money.

I wish I could rub my eyes to feel something comforting on my face.

Stavros grabs my hand gently in his to bring it to his lips. His luscious lips graze against my dry, un-moisturized hand. I want to reach out to touch his lips and face. I need to ensure I’m not dreaming about everything that has happened.

“I’m so fucking sorry, love. I’m so fucking sorry.”

I again don’t say anything. I want to ask Stavros what this means. Surely this is more out of his felt affection toward me over his attorney duties. It has to be. No other attorney would be sitting next to a woman in a hospital bed.

“I’m going to make this right. You tell me what you want, and you got it.”

“Kiss me?” I ask quietly.

He looks as if I just kicked him while he was down. I’m sure he didn’t expect me to ask him that. He said I could have anything I wanted, and that is what I wanted.

He leans over the bed carefully so as not to jostle me. He is careful not to move any of the wires that are all over my body, and his lips line up perfectly with mine.

His lips brush mine with just a little passion. I kiss him back with my hands, itching to dive into his hair. I would love to have a more extended kiss than this one, but it is perfect for this moment.

I don’t ask Stavros what all of this means. I don’t have it in me to get clarification at this time.

I feel the room’s energy shift and know my twin brother is standing at the door.

“I’m not even going to pretend to be okay with this. Dude, that’s my sister.”

Stavros keeps my hand in his as he stares down my brother. “Bro, I know she’s important to you. I can’t explain it. It just happened.”

Andreas tsks his tongue and shakes his head from the doorframe. “If you hurt my sister, I will kill you.”

Crazy people surround me.

Andreas comes into the room just as a detective enters the room. “Audrina Bancroft?”

I don’t say anything because I’m still in shock over everything that has transpired.

“This is my sister, Audrina. She just woke up from a coma. I’m her twin brother. Can I help you?”

“Ma’am, I’m sorry to be the one to inform you of this, but your husband has died last night.”

“What?” I choke out. I must have heard him wrong.

“Yes. It seems as if Derek has succumbed to his injuries. I wanted to let you know that his attorney will contact your attorney to discuss the remaining marital assets.”

Is he dead? What do they mean? He can’t be dead. I’m the one who got hurt the most, but I’m still alive. Something isn’t adding up, and I’m bewildered.

My head starts to swim with questions, but none of my questions can formulate.

“You will have to understand that Audrina has just woke up from a coma. A coma in which Derek put her in.”

The detective clears his throat. “Of course. I’m sure this is a hard time for everyone involved.”

I’m not sure I’m understanding what is being said. He’s dead.

I’m alive but he’s dead.

He’s dead but I’m alive.

My head is spinning with an onslaught of questions but they again can’t form.
