Aleksandr gives me a kind look. “A surprise,” he says, a hint of a smile on his face.
Dmitri leads us to the garage. He opens the door to a really sleek black car. I recognize it from when we went to the cabin.
“Get in,” Dmitri says, all serious like he always is.
Nikolai drives, taking us out of the city. We pass so many buildings, and finally stop in front of a huge, fancy mansion.
Aleksandr exits first and offers his hand to help me out of the car. I take it, following him to the mansion’s front door. The place is amazing – big gardens all around, looking so peaceful.
“What is this place?” I can’t help but ask, looking around in wonder.
Aleksandr turns to me, his eyes reflecting the beauty of the gardens around us. “This is a special place for us,” he explains. “A place where we can relax, away from the city and our... usual business.”
My heart races as we walk through the mansion’s grand doors. The interior is even more stunning than the outside. Marble floors, elegant artwork adorning the walls, and plush furniture.
Nikolai joins us, his eyes lighting up as he sees my reaction. “We thought you’d like it here. A change of scenery,” he says.
Dmitri closes the door behind us, his presence reassuring. “It’s safe here. You can let your guard down, Emma.”
I look around, still trying to take it all in. The high ceilings, the exquisite furniture, the art on the walls – it’s all so overwhelming, yet incredibly beautiful.
“Why are we here?” I ask.
Aleksandr leads me to a set of large, open doors leading to a lush garden. “To show you there’s more to our lives than what you’ve seen. We have our moments of peace and beauty too,” he says softly.
As I step into the garden, the scent of flowers fills the air, and the sound of a distant fountain plays a soothing melody. I realize they’re showing me a different side of their world, one that’s not just about power and survival, but also about beauty and tranquility.
It’s a side of them I haven’t seen before, and it touches me deeply. For a moment, I forget about the complexities of our lives, lost in the serenity of this hidden paradise.
As I’m taking in the tranquility of the garden, my phone buzzes. I pull it out and see a text message. No number, just a message that reads, “Thank you, Emma. For keeping her safe.”
Instantly, I know it’s from Maria.
Maria was never innocent; I’ve known that much. But keeping a daughter away from her mother? That’s not something I can stand by and let happen. In this world, innocence is a luxury few can afford. Not even me, not anymore.
Dmitri, noticing the change in my expression, asks, “Who is it?”
I glance at the message one more time before pocketing my phone. “No one,” I reply, not wanting to delve into the complexities of the message right now.
Then, with an attempt to shift the mood, I suggest, “Shall we explore more?”
Chapter 27: Epilogue
Emma
I wake up to the sound of waves crashing and the morning sun peeking through the curtains. It’s been about two months since Alina left, and since I last saw my sister. Life’s changed.
Right now, me, Dmitri, Aleksandr, and Nikolai are on an island they bought, a place just for us to relax and be away from everything. And let me tell you, it’s like paradise.
I’m in bed, sandwiched between the three of them. The bed is enormous, like you need a map to find your way out of it.
Dmitri is on one side, always the early riser, already half-awake and looking at me with those eyes that seem to know what I’m thinking. Aleksandr, on the other side, is still asleep, his face peaceful. And Nikolai, well, he’s sprawled across the end of the bed, taking up more space than anyone else.
I try to get up without waking them, but Dmitri catches my hand. “Morning,” he says, his voice still heavy with sleep.
“Morning,” I whisper back, smiling.
Aleksandr stirs, mumbling something about coffee, while Nikolai just pulls a pillow over his head, trying to block out the morning light.
