I understand the importance of this moment for her, the need for a personal goodbye with Alina. Nodding, I give her a reassuring smile. “Okay,” I agree, respecting her wish for privacy in this tender moment.

Emma gives me a small, grateful smile before turning to Alina’s door, taking a deep breath as she prepares herself for the farewell.

Chapter 26: A Moment of Peace

Emma

I step into Alina’s room, where her toys are scattered around. It feels really heavy, the way saying goodbye always is. “Hey, Alina.”

She sees me and runs over, wrapping her little arms around me. “Emma!” she says, holding me tight.

I kneel down to hug her back. “I’m going to miss you lots, you know,” I tell her, trying hard not to cry.

Alina looks at me, not really getting why I have to go. Her big eyes are sad.

I push her hair back gently. “You’re going to be with your mom now. She’s missed you so much,” I explain softly.

“Emma stay?” Alina asks, looking hopeful.

That question really gets to me. “I can’t, sweetie. But I’ll always be around if you need me, okay?” I say, smiling for her.

We play with her toys and talk for a bit more. I want to remember these moments.

When it’s time to go, I hug her one more time. “Be good for your mom, alright? And remember, Emma loves you lots.”

She nods, her small hand clutching mine. “Play one more time?” she asks, her voice hopeful.

I can’t resist her sweet request. “One more time,” I agree, my heart swelling with love for this little girl.

We sit down with her toys, and I let her choose the game. She picks up her favorite dolls, handing one to me. “This isPrincess Emma,” she declares, giving me a doll with a big smile painted on.

“And this is Princess Alina,” I say, holding up another doll. “They go on adventures together.”

Alina giggles. “They go to the moon!”

“To the moon!” I echo, lifting our dolls into the air. We pretend to fly through space, making whooshing sounds and laughing when our dolls land on the ‘moon’ – a pile of cushions.

Alina’s imagination runs wild, and I follow her lead. We explore moon caves and meet friendly aliens. Our laughter fills the room, and for a moment, the sadness of goodbye fades away, replaced by the joy of play.

It’s only when we hear a soft sound that we look up. Standing in the doorway are Aleksandr, Nikolai, and Dmitri. They’ve been watching us, a mix of affection and sadness in their eyes.

“It’s time to go, Emma,” Aleksandr says softly, his voice bringing me back to the reality of the moment.

I give Alina one last hug, feeling a surge of emotion as tears start to blur my vision. She clings to me, her small arms tight around my neck.

Dmitri steps forward, gently taking Alina’s hand. “Come on, little one,” he says kindly.

As they walk away, I can’t hold back my tears anymore. They stream down my face, a mix of love, loss, and everything in between.

Aleksandr wraps his arms around me, offering a strong, comforting embrace. “Everything’s okay now, Emma,” he whispers.

I lean into his hug, grateful for the support.

“Emma,” Nikolai’s voice is soft, pulling me out of my thoughts. “We want to take you somewhere.”

I realize I’ve been standing outside Alina’s room for ages. Looking up, I see Nikolai and Dmitri waiting for me.

“Where?” I ask, my voice sounding distant even to my own ears.
