Tomorrow at The Courthouse

12 p.m.

“Shit,” I whisper out.

“Shit good? Shit bad? Skye?”

I turn it over, and they all squeal again. Ray just grins.

“You all knew. I can’t get married. I've nothing to wear. What the hell am I going to do?”

“You’re gonna eat your breakfast, and then you’re gonna open envelope number two.” Ray just grins again.

“You all know what’s happening, don’t you?”

“I’m in charge today. Tank’s orders. So breakfast, then more excitement!”

As our breakfasts arrive, I slide the envelopes back into the larger one.

Ray leans over and places her hand on my arm. “Don’t panic. We've thought of everything. Your only job today is to have fun, okay?”

My eyes well a little, and I nod. “Thank you!”

After we eat breakfast, I get out envelope number two. There’s a card inside. I open it up. “It’s an address.” I turn the card over. “Just an address, nothing else.”

“So tap it into your phone, and let’s go.” Ray jumps up from the table and goes to pay.

“Ray, I can’t let you keep paying for everything. I need to start looking for a job or something.”

“Nonsense, you keep cooking that little one! That’s the only thing you need to worry about.” She pulls me in for a hug. “Now come on, kiddo, let’s find this address.”

As we follow the map, we end up outside the bank. I look down at my phone, the address, and then back again. “The bank? Did I type it in wrong?”

“Come on, let's go inside and take a look.” Ray coos.

I grin as she pulls me through the door, as we walk into the foyer. An older gentleman greets me. “Ms Pershing, I’m Mr Greene, the manager here. If you want to follow me, the rest of your party can sit over there. Ladies, someone will bring you some refreshments while you wait.”

I look at Ray as I’m so confused, and she nods, giving me the green light to follow Mr Greene. No pun intended. As I follow Mr Greene, we head upstairs and through a set of doors. Tank is in the chair in front of the desk.

He stands as I walk through the door and steps towards me, extending his hand. “Morning, love.” He grins, pulling me into him and giving me a chaste kiss. Pulling me to the seat next to him.

“Ms Pershing, would you open envelope number three, please?” Mr Greene asks.

“Sorry?” I’m so confused as to what’s happening right now.

“Envelope number three, Ms Pershing,” Mr Greene replies.

I open up envelope number three. It has in it my birth certificate. Attached to that is my legal name change certificate and my social security card with my new name on it. My mouth drops open. Everything is legally changed to my new name. “Tank?” I gasp.

“Ms Pershing, if I could take your documents, we can set up your accounts.” I lift my hand and pass him the envelope with everything in it. As I lift it, my hand is shaking.
