He lets out a shaky breath. “Who do you work for?”

“I can’t tell you that… yet! I am requesting information for you, but I’ve got to go through the proper channels.”

“Are you here under false pretences?”

“No.”

“Is this the first time you’ve been here?”

“The States? No. This area? Yes.”

“How many times have you been to the States?

“Too many to count.”

“Just how dangerous are you?”

“I’m deadly. I’m meticulous and overly protective of those I love. You are one of those people.”

“Are we safe with you? And this organisation?”

“Me? Definitely. Them? Probably.”

Huffing out a breath, he asks, “What do I do, Ray? I have a club to protect and families relying on me. If The Armoury decides to wage war on us, we’ll all die!”

“Firstly, it’s not The Armoury— ”

“How can you be so sure?”

“I know The Armoury, Ares. Trust me when I say this isn’t them.”

“Can you keep us safe?”

“I’m doing my best, Ares.”

“So you're not an ordinary girl that just wandered in off the streets and ended up here accidentally?”

“Not an ordinary girl, no. Just wandered in, yes, definitely. This wasn't planned, and I never intended to stay.”

“Scar?”

I smile at him. “Scar knows bits. She’s not ordinary, far from it, but not in the same way I'm not ordinary. I think you already know that, though.”

“How many men did you take out to get them back?”

“About seven, got two back here, one left alive, one in a body bag.”

“I’m sorry I tried to pass it off as an affair or bit of fun while they were away. I know Steel would never do that. I just panicked. If you tell anyone that, though, I will be… very upset with you.”

I laugh as I punch his arm. “Are we good, Ares? You’re… important to me!”

“Yeah, we’re good. You’re important to me too!”

“Seriously?”

“Yep.”

“Good, I need a favour!”
