“You all right?” Alek asked, scrutinizing me.
I blinked. “Of course I’m all right. What makes you ask that?”
“The fact that I’ve been waiting for you to make a move for the last five minutes.” Alek gestured to the board game we were supposed to be playing. “Instead, you’ve been staring out the window constantly.”
I shook my head to clear it. “Sorry, man,” I said, reaching down and moving a piece aimlessly. “Just a bit…distracted.”
“Because Malcolm’s absurdly hot daughter is in town?”
I glared. “You really need a filter between your brain and your mouth,” I said.
“Nah. Where’s the fun in that?” Alek grinned. “Though I do have to point out that you just made the worst move I’ve ever seen and basically blocked yourself from winning the game altogether.”
I blinked, then glanced down at the board. He was right.
“So the two of you grew up together?” he asked.
I nodded. “I was over at her place pretty much every day when Malcolm was training me.”
“But you haven’t seen her since you joined the Silver Wolves.”
I nodded. “The whole thing is a bit weird,” I admitted. “She’s definitely grown up.”
It was driving me crazy. Ever since I’d seen Jenn, she was all I could think about. I couldn’t get that scent of pine and mint out of my head. It was driving my wolf crazy. I could sense himpacing back and forth inside me, wanting to burst forward and find her. I wanted to rub against her and mark her as mine. I wanted to run my fingers through her hair and—
“Well, it sounds like she’s going to be around for a while,” Alek said, interrupting my thoughts. “Oliver said that the girls are taking her out to show her the town and get to know one another better.”
My head shot up, and I spun to face Alek. “Really?” I asked, eyebrows raised.
“Well, unless Oliver suddenly turned into a pathological liar overnight, then yeah. That’s what he told me.”
“Any particular idea where?”
“Oliver doesn’t exactly tell me his wife’s whereabouts on a regular basis,” Alek said, shrugging. “But the fun thing about living in a small town is that, funny enough, it’s really small. Meaning, it shouldn’t take too much for you to be able to find her.”
“Who said anything about me looking for her?”
Alek rolled his eyes. “I’m your best friend. I’ve known you for how long?”
“Since you came up to me the day you joined the Silver Wolves and asked me if I knew how to smuggle in contraband,” I said. “I figured you were all right after that.”
“Anyway, I think going into town and wandering around aimlessly until you find her probably isn’t the best move.”
I gave him a mock bow. “Then what is your suggestion, oh wise and noble sage?”
“Oliver also mentioned that they were going to go up to the mansion later in the evening to go for a swim at the lake.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?” It was impossible not to imagine what Jenn must look like in a bikini nowadays. Just the thought was enough to make me nearly growl with approval and dash off to the mansion right then.
Alek bobbed his head, his mop of red curls bouncing enthusiastically.
“You know,” I said, rubbing my chin, “I suddenly remembered a very important question I have to discuss with Jameson, and I can only talk to him about it later in the evening. I guess I’ll have to go to the mansion later.”
“You do realize that I’m coming with you, right?”
“And why’s that?”
His eyes widened with innocence. “Maybe I have a very pressing topic to discuss with Jameson as well.” He grinned from ear to ear. “Or maybe I just want to see this trainwreck for myself.”
