“We have to tell your father,” I said.

Jenn’s head spun back to me, her mouth dropping open in a mix of panic and what had to be anger.

“No,” she said. “Absolutely not.”

“Come on, Jenn,” I said, gesturing at the door. “Your injured friend showed up at his house. You’re not going to be able to hide that. And he can help.Wecan help.”

“I didn’t tell my dad because he’ll get overprotective,” she said. “The same way he’s always been.”

“And did you ever think that might be a good thing when you have some psycho shifter coming after you?” I asked.

“I’ve been around psycho shifters all my life,” she said, giving me a very pointed look.

“Look,” I said, ignoring the barb, “Freya isn’t in good shape. I don’t like the look of that leg. I can’t believe she got here on it. She’ll need to stay here for a couple of days before she goesanywhere else. Your dad isn’t an idiot. As soon as he smells her, he’ll know something is up.”

Jenn flinched. Sighing, I stepped toward her and put my arm on her shoulder.

“Let us help,” I said.

My wolf was already agitated, furious over the fact that some asshole had tried to force himself on Jenn. He wanted to go out there, find the guy, and kill him for laying a hand on her. And now that I was this close to Jenn, those emotions were shifting to wanting to bring her closer. The scent of her was intoxicating.

“You’re not going to give me any choice in this, are you?” she asked.

I burst into a brilliant grin. “See? I knew you would catch on eventually.”

She glared at me, and I’m pretty sure she would have started arguing had it not been for the noises coming from the closed bedroom. Pushing past me, she opened the door and ran in to check on her friend. I followed quickly behind.

Freya was stirring, eyes fluttering open as Jenn went to sit next to her on the bed.

“Are you okay?” Jenn asked.

“Why does everyone ask that?” I muttered. The comment was supposed to be to myself, but Jenn must have heard because she shot me a glare.

“As okay as I can be,” Freya muttered. Her dark eyes found me, and she blinked. “Thanks, uh, whoever you are.”

“Klyte,” I said. “Currently, your nurse-slash-healer-slash whatever you want to call me. Jenn likes ‘asshole,’ so if that’s more your stride—”

“Klyte?” Freya glanced over at Jenn. “ThatKlyte?”

“So you’ve heard of me?” I didn’t miss the red creeping up Jenn’s face.

“Only about how incredibly infuriating you are,” Jenn said.

“She did say that a lot,” Freya admitted, almost apologetically.

“The important thing is that she was talking about me,” I said cheerily. But then the grin on my face vanished. “I am here to help, though. So if you could tell me what happened, I would really appreciate it.”

Freya glanced at Jenn, who nodded. “Only if you feel up to it,” Jenn said.

“After you left, Isaac was furious,” Freya began. “He turned the whole town against me. A couple of nights ago, he came to my house, demanding to know where you were. When I wouldn’t tell him, he…” she swallowed and winced as if in memory. “I’m sorry, Jenn. He made me tell him.”

I saw the panic and fear in Jenn’s eyes, but she still managed to say, “It’s okay.”

“I left as soon as I could to come warn you,” Freya said. “My car broke down halfway here, and I had to run the rest of the way.”

“Jesus,” Jenn whispered. “I’m so sorry, Freya.”

“It’s okay.” Freya gave a shaky, tired smile. “After everything, I was considering leaving the pack, anyway. If Isaac is going to be the next alpha, I don’t want anything to do with it. So it wasn’t like I was leaving anyone behind.”
