‘You have no choice. I was lenient for a time, letting you live out whatever little fantasy got into your head. But fucking a mortal is one thing. Revealing yourself to a roomful of them is another.’

‘You can’t make me go,’ Amor growled. ‘I love her.’

‘You barely know her,’ the younger man said. ‘You’re just blinded by her pussy. There’s plenty more of that in Olympus.’

Confusion clouded my mind as I tried to comprehend the scene in front of my eyes.Cupid was real? Amor was a god? None of it made sense.

‘I’m going to make them all forget you ever existed, and then we are going. You can come willingly, or I can pull every one of your feathers out one by one until you give in.’ The older man lifted a hand and swept it across the room. Jack and Danny slumped down, and I followed suit, but not before I witnessed the three men vanish in a blinding light.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

AMOR

‘Have you lost your mind?’ Zeus’ voice thundered throughout the Pantheon, sending nymphs skittering away in fear.

‘I want to be with her.’

‘You’re an imbecile. Get your cock wet and think you are above the rules.’

‘I’m not the first god to have lain with a mortal.’

‘No, but you’re the only one idiotic enough to want to make it into something more than a quick rut.’

Anger surged through me, causing the hairs on the back of my neck to bristle. The veins in my arms stood out against my skin as I clenched my fists tight.

‘You can’t force me to stay.’

‘I’ll turn the woman into a goat if you try to force my hand. I can make you suffer, Cupid. You have a job to do here. Youbelonghere.’

‘I don’t. I loath Olympus.’

Zeus’ face darkened, and Anteros stepped forward, standing between us and catching my eye. ‘Drop it, Amor. Not here. Not like this. Nothing good will come of it if you push him now.’

Taking a steadying breath, I turned and launched into the air. My wings stretched as I flew, the feeling alien after days without them weighing me down.

My gilded home awaited, just as I’d left it. The nymphs had clearly busied themselves with the news of my return. Platters laden with fruits and sweet treats covered just about every surface. Soft harp music filtered through the rooms and it was all so very perfect.

Grabbing an exquisitely painted vase, I dashed it hard against a wall. It shattered into a thousand tiny pieces.

The damage was so out of place in the utopia and I grinned, a wildness gripping me.

One platter landed on the floor with a clatter as I upended it, sending fruit to every corner of the room. When it squelched between my shoes against the marble floors, I let out a crazed laugh.

He could force me to stay, but he couldn’t force me back into the ideal little box I’d grown up in.

Fuck Zeus.

Fuck Olympus.

With glee, I toppled a stone statue through a window. Rich nectar stained the couch as I went between drinking from one of the golden jugs and splashing it over soft furnishings.

Eventually, there was nothing left to destroy.

I lay down in the middle of the floor and let the real emotion wash over me. Sadness. Loss. Pain.

How could Eva have had such a profound effect on me in such a short time?

When I looked deep into my heart, I knew it wasn’t just her. I’d long idolised the mortals. They filled their short lives to bursting with the things that were important to them. They strived and suffered, loved and lost, fucked and laughed, and continued on through the mess without even the promise of another day.
