Page 136 of His to Ruin

“Good because you know what good friends do?”

“Tell me,” I tease.

“They make sure their friends eat.”

I roll my eyes even though I am quite hungry now.

“What do you have in mind, friend?”

He fishes his car keys from his pocket.

“How about a change of scenery. Bobs Diner sound good? They make an awesome burger. I’ll even throw in some fries. What do you say?”

“And a drink?”

He walks over to an Audi Spider, the lights flashing with the click of a button.

“For you, you can have anything.”

“Lucas isn’t invited is he?”

“Na he’s football practice.”

“Football?”

“Yeah. Ian didn’t want to uproot you any more than you were already which is why he didn’t make you move to Rockford High. Lucas wasn’t happy about it, which is why he’s always in a pissy mood these days.

“Why did he agree to it then?”

“You need to understand something Jordin. What Ian says goes. You don’t question it, and I mean that. Whatever you do, do not question Ian’s decisions. There’s no good that can come of it.”

I open the passenger side door but hover before I get in.

“You don’t think I know what Ian is? The mafia doesn’t scare me, Logan.”

“You only say that because you haven’t seen the ugly side to it yet. You’ll see the big fancy house, with big fancy cars in the driveway. The shopping sprees on credit cards without limits. You don’t know where all that comes from or what must be done in order to get it.”

“I know what the mafia is and what they do. I don’t want a single penny of that blood money.”

“Unfortunately as a Maloti you don’t get that choice.”

“And you? Do you get that choice?”

“None of us do, Jordin. You would run from this world screaming in terror if you only knew, but once you’re a part of it there’s no getting away from it. We do what we need to in order to survive, even the Garo’s

“Wow. It must be bad if you’re sympathising with the Garo’s.”

Logan holds the door to Bobs Diner open for me allowing me to walk in first.”

As we eat our burgers and fries which really is as good as Logan said it would be, his words keep popping into my head.

“You would run from this world screaming in terror if you only knew, but once you’re a part of it there’s no getting away from it.”

Is that what Caleb meant when he said he had no choice I wonder. Was he ordered to do it by someone? By the Garo’s? Is he working with them somehow? Or did he do it because he’s Saints best friend and feels like he has something to prove in order to stay on top of the food chain at school? I don’t know. This whole entire thing is fucked up.

I’m still thinking about it when a hand is waved in my face.

“Hum, what?”
