No one answers.

“All right then, now that that’s out of the way let’s get started.”

She walks around to the white board popping open a lid from a marker writing WELCOME TO WORLD HISTORY.

“Alright class, now we’ve got all introductions out of the way we can begin with what’s going to be covered this year and the historical events…”

Everyone looks to the left when the door opens abruptly interrupting Ms Davis next words.

It’s the cocky guy I almost knocked over outside, Dalton or maybe Colton I think he said his name was.

A smaller red-haired guy in a football jersey follows closely behind him. One of them says something to the other and they both laugh out loud like they haven’t a care in the world. They take their seats which is evidently one of the seats I was told to quickly move from.

“Mr Fitzroy how kind of you to join us. I see that you are in keeping with your tradition last year of always being late to my class.

Perhaps this year I will make do on those detention threats starting from today,“ she says mockingly. He doesn’t even acknowledge that she’s speaking to him. Jerk.

“Well Mr Fitzroy this is a whole new year and guess what, this year we are going to be doing things a bit differently. From today onwards anyone late to my class without a note will have after school detention. This is your first and only warning so do not let it happen again.”

I watch him slowly lift his head up from his phone to look at her. His jaw clenched tight.

“Is that right,” he mocks. “And on who’s fucking authority do you have to make such a threat? Do not forget your place here and who pays your wages, Dorothy,” he bites out harshly making her instantly blush with embarrassment.

Jesus. What the hell is happening here? If anyone in my old school spoke to a teacher like that you would have been chucked out of class in an instant with a months’ worth of detention. The class has gone deathly silent as Ms Davis stands with her mouth agape like she’s suddenly forgot to breathe. She’s clearly frightened right now.

“Why don’t you step out for a minute, Ms Davis. It will give you a chance to collect yourself and reflect upon what I just said.”

My eyes can’t believe what happens next.

Instead of sending him straight to the principles office for talking back and being disrespectful, she takes a breath, nods, and on shaky legs leaves the room.

Seconds tick by and no one has uttered a single word as I wonder just who does this guy think he is? Is he the principal’s son or something? Even if he is, he still shouldn’t have spoken to a teacher like that.

After several tense minutes Ms Davis walks back into class taking a stand at the front of her desk.

“I would like to apologise for my outburst class.”

I look around the room but everyone sits stone faced looking towards Colton as if waiting on his next move.

What? This can’t be right. Surely, I’m hearing things.

Addressing Colton directly she adds, “It won’t happen again.” Then plasters on a fake smile as if nothing happened.

The fuck!

“Okay class let’s begin. Please pay close attention to what I'm putting on the board because there will be a quiz on this on Friday.”

The class erupts into inaudible grumbles and groans just as an older man opens the door and asks her if she can go over something with him that should only take a minute or two. She excuses herself but this time keeps the door ajar. Out of the corner of my eye I see a hand waving in my direction stealing away my attention from the asshole who gets up from his seat and walks out the door. I turn to the girl sitting next to me. She looks familiar but I can’t quite place where I know her from.

“Hi. I’m sorry to ask but do you by any chance have a spare pen I can borrow? I must have left mine in my locker.”

“Ah yeah sure,” I say, as I begin sifting through my backpack.

“Thanks.”

“It's no problem. I always carry spares, just in case.”

“This might seem like a weird question, but have we met before? It’s just you look somewhat familiar like I’ve seen you before somewhere and It's been wracking my brain since you walked in.”
