“Oh god,” Missy sighed. “I think that one is over.”
“Good, good. They’re only about thirty seconds long, and you’re about eight minutes apart. Once Shelby gets off the phone, we’ll head to the hospital. Did you bring your bag with you?”
Missy shook her head. “No, but Charlie can stop and get it.”
“Tell Charlie to stop and het Missy’s bag,” I called to Shelby.
I couldn’t hear what Charlie was saying, but Shelby had told him three times that Missy was in labor, and it didn’t seem like he was getting the message.
“We should try to get you in the car in between contractions. We can take my car.” I helped Missy up and headed to the front door.
Shelby was still shouting into the phone, “She’s having your baby, Charlie. Now. Not just in general.”
“Oh god,” Missy moaned. “Remind me if I ever do this baby thing again not to have Shelby in charge of anything. My best friend does not deal well under pressure.”
“One this is sure, there is never a dull moment when she’s around,” I laughed.
“She’s having your baby!” Shelby shouted again.
We made it to the door with Shelby right behind us. “Put it on speaker,” I called.
Shelby moved the phone from her ear and pressed the speaker button.
“Get to the damn hospital, Charlie, I’m in labor!” Missy hollered.
“Oh, shit,” Charlie gasped.
“That’s what I’ve been telling him,” Shelby complained.
I shook my head and helped Missy down the stairs.
“Get to Adams General, Charlie, and bring Missy’s bag,” I called.
“Oh, shit,” Charlie shouted.
“He’s handling this as well as Shelby,” I laughed. We made it to my car while Shelby locked up the house. “I’m going to sit in the back with you, and Shelby can drive.”
Missy nodded. “I feel another one coming,” she panted.
I glanced at my watch. Her contractions were coming closer. She leaned against the car and let out a loud scream.
“Is she having the baby?” Shelby called.
I shook my head. “Just another contraction. We do need to get to the hospital, though.”
“Oh, no,” Missy gasped. “I just peed myself.”
Yeah, that wasn’t pee. “Shelby, get in. We need to go now. This baby is coming sooner than I thought.”
“That wasn’t pee, was it?” Missy whispered.
I helped her in the car and looked her in the eyes. “Your water broke, sweetie. This is it, okay?”
She nodded, and her eyes welled with tears. “I’m having a baby.”
I nodded and stepped back. “You’re having a baby.” I closed the door, and rounded the back to get in the other door.
This was it.
