I had already decided that I needed to evacuate the girl when the second radio transmission came in.

“Jack, you need to move her to location B,” said the voice. The garble and static made it hard to hear the rest.

Then I heard the gunshots and men screaming.

Emma must have heard them too. She sat up, though she was still in and out of sleep.

I started to untie her bonds. “If you’re smart,” I said, “you’ll follow me.”

“What’s going on?”

“Get behind me,” I ordered, gesturing with my gun to our way out through a cargo loading area. “We have to move. I don’t think the guys coming after us are your dad’s men.”

Emma squinted her eyes at me. “That’s impossible, you’re lying.”

“Would your father’s men use explosives to get you out of here?” I asked, condescension dripping from my voice.

She fell in behind me. “Ok, ok. Just don’t point that thing at me.”

Grabbing her by the hand, I moved quickly. We ducked into the adjacent building, an abandoned warehouse, where we had our various lab operations.

Of course, Emma wanted to take a sight-seeing tour. “What’s all this?” she asked, moving towards a table where beakers and empty trays once held the ingredients to make some expensive designer drug.

“This isn’t a field trip,” I said, yanking her hand. She didn’t fight me, and stumbled along.

“Are they getting closer?”

I could hear the excitement and fear in her voice. It was like she wanted trouble.

“They’ll kill us if they find us,” I said, rushing both of us past various tables. “Let’s not try to look back too far huh?”

To her credit, Emma moved fast, especially when we heard the first shots.

“Stop! Hide here.” I pushed her towards a shelf with bags of some kind of white powder. I was fairly confident that it wasn’t some kind of explosive.

“No,” she said, looking over the bags. “What is this stuff?”

“Do I look like your tour guide?” I felt exhausted, and I needed to stop, not only to catch my breath, but to see if I could spot the guys that had to be following us.

“Kind of,” she said, “and I’m not dying because you told me to play a game of hide-and-seek with whoever these people are!”

“Hush!” I had a great vantage point, but I needed her to stop talking. Any wrong move would get us killed. A door burst open, about a hundred yards behind us, and I saw the first of several men. It was the King Mafia, and my worst fears had been realized. Either they knew that we had captured Emma Price, or Price himself had ordered they find her and get rid of his enemies.

Typical rich man power move. He just wants to get the best price. He doesn’t even care about his daughter.

I shook my head. As annoying as this hot mess of a woman was, I didn’t want anything to happen to her. I hated to admit it to myself, but I wanted her.

I wanted her for myself, and I was going to stop at nothing to defend her. Whatever it took, I was going to make sure she was unscathed. As god was my witness, this girl would be safe with me.

EMMA

He was like a fire surrounding me. I lost count of how many times that man, my kidnapper, had saved my life over the course of that hour. We ran, and I found myself wanting to listen to his every command.

Yet he was the reason that we were in this mess. If he hadn’t abducted me, I would be in my apartment, relaxing.

Mauling through obstacle after obstacle, Jack Baker was an unstoppable machine. Shots rang out, and he would fire back.
