I sense her hand moving behind me and, wasting no time at all, in a quick movement, I grip the gun and before she can react, I force it between us and pull the trigger. Her own gun falls to the ground as a shot rings out. She staggers back as I push her and note the open wound leaking blood from her chest.
As she falls to the ground, she stares up at me in shock and I stand above her body and feel my eyes flashing as I say darkly, “That’s for my father, you wicked bitch. Say hi to him in hell.”
I empty the gun right between her eyes and stare as the life drains from her body, a horrified expression of defeat on her face.
The gun smokes in my hand as I stare at her life seeping away along with her blood on the concrete, and then we hear loud voices and a commotion outside. I look up as the room fills with soldiers armed with machine guns and don’t fuck with me attitudes. As my brothers push through, I drop the gun and say darkly, “It’s good of you to show up.”
Killian stares at our aunt’s body and growls, “Fuck.”
Shade merely laughs out loud.
“Way to go, sis. That bitch had it coming.”
Killian nods to Connor and says in his husky voice, “Thank you.”
I stare between them and say in confusion. “What’s going on?”
“I’ll tell you back at the house.”
“No!” I yell. “You will tell me now, Killian, because I fucking deserve the truth.”
Killian nods to the guards and says calmly, “Leave us.”
He stares at Connor. “Except you.”
As the guards leave, it’s just the four of us along with Aunt Giselle’s dead body and a rage boiling inside me that means I am liable to do something I may regret.
CHAPTER40
ALEXEI
We drive around in circles and the frustration is killing me. Gleb is constantly on his phone as he pulls up information to help us.
We get a call that Connor’s car was heading east of the city and Gleb runs a search on the area. He narrows it down to three possible locations and we scatter our guards to search every individual one. We head to a part of town that is full of trouble. Poverty, desperate drug users and individuals who take their chances because they have nothing left to lose.
As we crawl along the streets, we attract unwanted attention that is soon scattered when our machine guns make an appearance. I am out of control and liable to shoot anyone that messes with me and as my guards do their job and question likely informants at gunpoint, the only intel we get is that we are more likely to find what we’re looking for at a disused warehouse on the southeast point of town.
My guard ‘persuades’ the informant to join him in return for a handful of dollars and his life spared and we head off following his directions.
I can tell we have the right place when I see the cars filling the area and I pray to God Killian got here first.
As we vacate the cars, his guards form a wall of menace between us and I step forward and say roughly, “Let us through.”
They shake their heads and I yell, “Fucking let me through if you don’t want to start a god-damned war.”
My own men are armed and equally as dangerous and the guard says respectfully, “Wait one minute.”
He says something in his earpiece and then points to me. “Only you.” My bodyguard makes to protest, and I snarl, “Leave it, Viktor. I go in alone.”
I hand my gun to him, demonstrating I am not armed, knowing if Serena’s brothers are there no harm will come to her, if she’s still alive that is.
My heart is heavy as I head inside the huge space, hoping like crazy they were in time. As I enter, I’m so relieved when I see Serena standing over a dead body, glaring at her brothers with fury blazing from her eyes. She looks like a warrior. A beautiful, amazing fucking goddess and then she turns that imperious gaze to me and her expression changes as the mask slips.
She wastes no time and runs into my arms and sobs on my shoulder, and as my arms fold around her, I stare at her brothers with cold fury.
“What happened?”
Killian sighs. “Our aunt happened.”
