I debated telling her where to shove her opinion but decided it wasn’t worth the argument. I could spare the money, and if it would get her to shut up, I might as well give in to her demands.

I pulled two hundred dollars out of my wallet and handed it to her; then, I scooped Lucy into my arms.

“Daddy!” she screamed as she laughed and kicked her legs.

“This is it?” Jordan asked.

“That’s it,” I said. “Don’t you have your alimony check for this month already, too?”

“That’s shit compared to what you should be paying me,” she said. “You have money, you spoiled me with the lifestyle you live, then you expect me to go back to what I’m not accustomed to?”

“I’m not in the mood to argue, Jordan,” I told her.

“You’re boring,” she shot back.

“I’m an adult; I’m supposed to be boring,” I said. “I’ll be in touch, I’m sure.”

“You better. She’s my daughter too, you know,” Jordan hissed before turning on her heel and heading back into the townhouse without even telling Lucy goodbye.

“Come on, sweetie,” I said. “Are you ready to go home?”

Lucy babbled in my arms as I carried her back toward my car, my mind on the conversation I’d just had with my ex. She only acted like she cared about being a mother to Lucy when she thought she was going to get something financial out of it. There wasn’t any affection between her and Lucy, nor did she ever seem to even care whether she got to see what was happening in Lucy’s life.

While I found that frustrating on principle, it left me feeling like my daughter deserved better.

She didn’t need to be influenced by a woman who acted the way Jordan did. As her father, I knew it was my job to make sure she was only in the care of people who wanted the best for her.

I had the money to hire help. I didn’t always have the time to take care of Lucy on my own, but maybe I could find a good nanny who would. As I pulled out of the driveway and headed home, I warmed up to the idea more and more.

Lucy kicked her legs from her big girl car seat and happily looked out the window as I drove home, humming along to the music every now and then. My heart swelled with love for her, and I silently promised myself I would find someone who would make her happy when I wasn’t around to do it myself.

Truth be told, I didn’t know the first thing about finding a nanny, but I figured it couldn’t be that hard. Especially with my budget.

I could afford to be picky.

And after making the massive mistake I had with the woman I married, I would be far, far pickier with bringing another woman into my life.

Even if it was purely professional.

Chapter Three

Cassie

“Alright, payday! All rounds on me!” Teresa loudly announced when she arrived at the coffee shop where I sat with Angela.

“And this is why we do payday in a coffee shop and not a bar,” Angela giggled. “Tiny TNT wouldn’t have shit left.”

“Probably a few good stories, at any rate,” Teresa replied. “Can’t say for sure what I would do for bills, but at least I could talk about the night we had.”

“Explain that to your landlord,” Angela said. “Pretty sure he doesn’t care how much fun you had the day you got paid. He just wants his check.”

“You don’t have to be the killjoy all the time,” Teresa said.

“Just giving you a small dose of reality,” Angela smiled.

“Girls, girls,” I cut in. “It’s payday. This is a good day, not a day for bickering, remember?”

My two younger sisters were full-time employees of the nanny business. While I also did what I could here and there, they were the two who had been pulling the most hours with the clients. I would have preferred to do the same myself, but there just wasn’t the clientele at this point to maintain those kinds of hours.
