“Father…did you change your mind. Do you want the bed?”

I wanted her in the bed, moaning underneath me as I fucked everything out of both of our minds. God, I hadn’t responded to a woman like this once since I’d awoken, and I’d been exposed to numerous ones throughout the church. I could have taken a liking to any, but I hadn’t. It was only her. If I didn’t snap back to reality soon, I might just do whatever it took to make it happen.

Chapter 5

Kit

I couldn’t stop myself from shaking as I scanned the large bedroom. What the hell was I doing? Today had been too much. First the scene with the man in blood, and now this dilemma with Chase? He was a priest. I was supposed to be able to trust him. The moment the lock had slid into place, I was no longer a woman he was trying to help. I was a captive. And from the look in his eyes when he left the room, I was one he wanted more than just information from.

Footsteps had me shifting on the bed. The moment Chase appeared, I couldn’t stop my shoulders from caving in. He didn’t just walk, he prowled like an animal. A deadly one. But fear was hard to hold onto when tattoos from his open shirt grabbed my attention. Who was this man? I should have been frightened about what he was doing, but my curiosity and lust overshadowed it. It had to stop.

I stared at the icepack Chase began lowering to my bare foot. The bruising had gotten worse. I knew it wasn’t broken, just sprained. The closer his hand got, the more I knew I had to put a stop to it.

“Here, let me.” I reached for the icepack, only for him to draw his hand back.

“Why don’t you tell me more about this brother of yours while I take care of your foot?”

“I’m perfectly capable of doing both at the same time.” I went to reach for it again when his narrowed expression had me sighing. “Fine.” I rested back against the pillow. “Rory’s a lawyer. He has a firm here in town. We usually communicate once a month but it’s been over three since I’ve heard from him. When he didn’t answer my calls after the first, I shrugged it off. No big deal, he’s usually too busy for me.” I tried to ignore the way Chase’s eyebrows drew in. “The second month, I grew skeptical. Still, I ignored it, figuring he was wrapped up in life here. I mean, he’s a lawyer. Surely he’s overloaded with work.”

“Here in Untold?” Skepticism. It was the same thought I’d had when I tried feeding myself the same excuse. This town couldn’t have so many cases that he’d not be able to call at least once.

“I guess not.” I shrugged. “All I know is when he neglected to call me back yesterday, my suspicions starting eating away at me. I phoned both of my jobs to let them know what was going on and jumped the first flight I could. Rory hasn’t always been the most reliable person. Well, not even close, but he’s my brother. I just can’t imagine him ignoring me for so long.” I glanced down as memories rushed in. “I mean, we had an argument the last time we talked, but it was petty and we’ve had them before. He wouldn’t cut communication this long unless something happened.”

Chase adjusted the ice and I winced at the burning throb.

“What was the argument about?”

Like I was going to tell him. “I can’t remember,” I said quietly.

“And he’s not answering his cell or at his office?”

I paused, trying to decide how to answer. “He sometimes gets new phones, but he always calls to give me the number.”

“New phones?” There it was. Suspicion.

“He’s a lawyer and he’s not a very nice one. Sometimes people get his personal number and he changes it.”

“And his office?”

“I…didn’t have the number until today. It’s not listed in information.”

“Why wouldn’t he have given it to you before? You’re his sister.”

My heart was beginning to race. There were too many lies I was trying not to mix up. Rory wasn’t even a lawyer. And McIntyre wasn’t his last name…or mine. He changed cellphones at the drop of a dime whenever his paranoia became too much. He was nothing but a schemer, embezzler, and lord knew what else. We hadn’t lived close to one another in years. Aside from a few instances of being exposed to his crimes, I knew nothing about the real him. I never really had, not even when our parents married. He’d always kept to himself.

“I’m not sure why I didn’t think to get it. I go to school fulltime on top of working two jobs. We’re both just busy, I guess.”

“And you’ve left behind school and work to come up here and find him?”

I swallowed hard. “Yes.”

Damn those eyes. They were burning a hole right into my soul. It was almost impossible to lie to him, but I had to. If I didn’t, Rory would be in so much more trouble than he’d been in in the past.

“Where are your parents?”

“Dead,” I said, lowering my voice again. “After their accident, Rory started to watch out for me.”

Chase mumbled a curse and licked his lips. “How old are you?”
