I pulled the panties free of her legs and tossed them to the side. “Leave? Are you making plans to go?”
Kit’s legs widened and she placed her feet down, still slightly keeping her legs spread. I was before her now. In the perfect position if I wanted to undo my pants and slide my cock inside her. Just the thought had me looking down at her pussy. Fuck, I wanted it. She was already getting so wet. I could see it, and damn if desperation wasn’t kicking in. I hadn’t wanted to rush this soon. Not this time.
“I haven’t decided on an actual date yet, but it will have to be soon. My rent will be due in a week and if I don’t make it back, they’ll toss out my stuff. I have things I can’t lose…pictures, certificates…well, everything. I’ve worked hard to make my house a home. I don’t want to lose any of it.”
To tell Kit she wasn’t leaving was the worst thing I could do. But how did I get her to stay. I knew how hard she’d had it and for her to have come so far, I couldn’t take that away.
“Can you pay without going back?” She got quiet and I knew there was something she wasn’t telling me. “Kit?”
“I’m sure I could, but…I can’t.”
“Why?”
Her lips pressed together and she quickly slipped from the bed, putting on her panties. “I haven’t been to work, Chase. I used the last of my money to get here. I doubt I’ll even have a job when I get back.”
I sighed as she grabbed her pants. “It’s my fault. Let me pay as a way to make amends. Or…I can fly down there with you, we can box up your things, and we can have them shipped up here. Or rent a truck and make a road trip out of it. Which, I have to admit, sounds pretty good given the circumstances. I could use a vacation.”
Her eyes widened. “You can’t be serious.”
“I’m not. At least on the road trip. I can’t leave that long. But I will go down there to help you move out.”
“Chase.” Kit buttoned her pants, crossing her arms over her chest. Her discomfort was obvious. “I’m sorry, but I can’t allow you to do any of that. I don’t want your money. As for the last part…I don’t think it would be wise for me to move here.”
“Because of the danger? Or because it’ll be with me?”
She paused. “Both. I don’t know you any more than I know this town. What I’ve seen from both hasn’t left the best impression.”
Hurt. Yes, rejection always had a way of tearing me to pieces on the inside. Maybe it was why I was so cold. So disconnected from people. But I wasn’t ready to give up. Not with Kit. She was speaking the truth and I couldn’t be angry at her for that.
“You’ve seen the worst of both, but you haven’t seen the good. Let me show you. I just need time. Allow me to pay.”
Her exhale was loud while she shook her head, staring at the floor. “I’m sorry, I can’t. I’ll figure something out.”
“Pride is one of the worst sins there are. Let it go, little one. You’re carrying my child. I think that gives me the right to help you as much as I can.”
“You didn’t force this child on me.” Her eyes lifted to mine. “I don’t expect anything from you at all.”
“Don’t expect then, just allow for it to happen.”
“It’s not that easy.”
I climbed from the bed, walking over until I was reaching up to cup her face. “It’s simple. I’ll handle it. No more worrying. I told you I’d take care of you. I have every intention to do just that.”
“Don’t you get tired?”
“Tired?”
Worry clouded her features as she leaned into my palm.
“Yeah. You’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders—me, leaving the church, Jim, Rory, this town. You have to be exhausted.”
I laughed, shrugging. “Right now, you’re my top priority. And this,” I said, lowering to settle my hand on her stomach. “You two, that’s all I’m focused on at the moment. The others I will take a day at a time. I have faith this will all work out as it should. That is enough.”
Chapter 23
Kit
No more threats. No news. The waiting was not only taking its toll on me, but on the men as well. Chase said he’d take it a day at a time, but I could see his stress. Especially where it concerned me. The trip to the doctor’s office had him on alert the entire time. His body was tense and as he stood next to the bed I was lying on, he was as stiff as a statue. Not to mention, Palo and Weston who were waiting outside, watching the place. Everything was a mess. The longer it took to find answers, the worse things were becoming.
