Page 10 of Shock

“You’re going back to work for that sexy as fuck doctor.” She sings songs and words to me, and I get a flashback of us teasing the boys after they got their first kisses.

“Don’t,” I point at her as her mouth opens.

“Hannah and Diego, sitting in a tree,” I pick up a pillow and swing it at her head.

She falls off the bed, trying to avoid my attack and the mood in the room shifts.

“SHIT,” Dice cries out, making me frown.

“You ok?” I climb off, helping her up, and she looks panicked.

“I, um…I think so.” I don’t like her answer at all.

“What’s wrong.” I lift her wobbling chin and find tears in her eyes.

“Nothing. I’m here for you.” My eyes widen at her response.

“It absolutely matters! I’m fine. Or I will be. What’s wrong, Mallory?” She sighs and sits on the edge of my bed gingerly.

“You need to keep your mouth shut, Shock. This can not become common knowledge yet.” I nod in understanding and bite my lip as all sorts of scenarios work their way through my mind.

“I’m pregnant.”

That was not one of them.

“You mean you have cancer.” She rolls her eyes at me.

“What the fuck do you mean? Who’s the father?” She cringes and shakes her head.

“I don’t know.” She doesn’t meet my eyes when she whispers it.

Well, fuck. This is shaping up to be a very long week.

“Meaning?” I need clarification on that statement like yesterday.

“I do not know his name. It was a one-night stand. Condom broke. End of story.” I sit on the floor in front of her and look up into her eyes.

“How far along are you, and are you keeping it?” She shrugs.

FUCK.

CHAPTER SIX

DIEGO

“Dr. Diego Espinosa, a word please.”I stop walking and take a deep breath before fixing a fake smile on my face.

“Yes?” I look Dr. Richard Prichett in his beady eyes.

“I hear congratulations are in order. How did you manage to talk the administration into accepting your offer?” My smile turns genuine now.

“When you aren’t a subpar medical official giving horrible care, they tend to reward your hard work. Not having any pending sexual harassment suits helps, too. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m late to a meeting.” His mouth drops open as the staff around us hisses and giggles.

I turn away from him and head to my office not having another thing to say to him.

When I open my office door, I’m met with the smell of coconuts, and I close my eyes for a second. Jesus, I missed her smell.

“You shouldn’t be on hospital property.” I close the door before anyone sees her.
